It is CAL&#8217;s baseball diamond in Alexander. I happened to pass by when the team was <a href=\"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2018\/07\/the-last-outs-for-cal\/\">having its last practice, ever<\/a>. The tie-in to this post is that a district so small that it metaphorically <a href=\"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2017\/01\/cal-losing-junior-high-high-school\/\">couldn&#8217;t keep the high school&#8217;s lights on<\/a>\u00a0still managed to provide lights for baseball.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Sioux City&#8217;s three high school baseball diamonds will get lights in time for next season, <a href=\"https:\/\/siouxcityjournal.com\/news\/local\/education\/with-mlb-help-sioux-city-high-school-baseball-fields-will\/article_039aaff6-7ea8-50e3-a559-1a646c88c992.html#tracking-source=home-top-story\">the <em>Sioux City Journal<\/em> reports<\/a>. Baseball was the only high school sport in the city that did not have lights for night games. Major League Baseball is chipping in nearly a third of the total cost to provide lights.<\/p>\n<p>The fact Sioux City&#8217;s diamonds\u00a0<em>didn&#8217;t<\/em> have lights was stunning news to me. North Tama has them*, and so do NICL schools. It wasn&#8217;t until somewhat recently, when I learned that Iowa Star Conference games were being played as varsity-then-JV doubleheaders starting at 5, that I even became aware that some of Iowa&#8217;s smallest schools don&#8217;t\u00a0have lights at their diamonds.<\/p>\n<p>*Based on the construction of the athletic complex, North Tama could play night baseball games <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/cut4\/on-this-day-in-1988-wrigley-field-hosted-its-first-night-game\/c-246449864\">before the Chicago Cubs<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>July 9, 2018: This is not Sioux City.
