It turns out it&#8217;s not the only one like that in Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>Merle Hay Mall is split not just between the Des Moines and Urbandale school districts, but the cities of Des Moines and Urbandale as well. Below is a display of the mall from the Polk County Assessor&#8217;s Office.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10145\" alt=\"MallPoCoAssessor\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MallPoCoAssessor.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MallPoCoAssessor.jpg 320w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/MallPoCoAssessor-248x300.jpg 248w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The thick black line is the parcel separation, city limits, school district boundary, and what would have been an extension of 62nd Street if the mall hadn&#8217;t beaten the development here. The <em>Des Moines Register<\/em> says the original open-air mall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/money\/business\/2018\/07\/13\/sears-closures-des-moines-merle-hay-mall-closing-kmart-sears-holdings-sears-roebuck-ward-younkers\/783129002\/\">opened in 1959<\/a>. Aerial photos show it started entirely on the Des Moines side. The line is almost, but not quite, down the north-south interior hallway of the mall south of Kohl&#8217;s (upper left corner).<\/p>\n<p>Like Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids, <a href=\"https:\/\/whotv.com\/2018\/07\/24\/malls-in-the-metro-make-plans-for-empty-department-stores\/\">MHM is losing two anchors<\/a> in a short span of time. Younkers is going out of business on the Urbandale side (mid-left corner), and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcci.com\/article\/last-sears-store-in-des-moines-to-close\/22142601\">second-to-last Sears in Iowa<\/a> (upper right corner) will close in mid- to late October.
