However, it marks Omaha as the terminus.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A century and a half ago today, the United States\u00a0was connected in a way it had never been before. The Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads hooked up at Promontory, Utah, to complete the Transcontinental Railroad across the western half of the nation.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa played a role in that, of course. Council Bluffs was chosen by Abraham Lincoln to be the east end of the Union Pacific Railroad. Between 1865 and 1869, the Chicago and North Western Railroad rapidly built track from Boone to Missouri Valley to hook up with north-south trackage that parallels I-29 today.\u00a0The final, true transcontinental connection wasn&#8217;t quite a done deal until a railroad bridge across the Missouri River opened in 1872. (See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/omahamagazine.com\/articles\/how-omaha-rail-roaded-council-bluffs\/\">&#8220;How Omaha Railroaded Council Bluffs,&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0<em>Omaha<\/em>\u00a0magazine, March\/April 2017.) The C&amp;NW route, the first east-west railroad completed across Iowa, would serve as the basis for the nearly all of the Lincoln Highway and US 30, and itself become <a href=\"http:\/\/trn.trains.com\/railroads\/railroad-history\/2006\/06\/union-pacific-merger-family-tree\">part of the Union Pacific in 1995<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10956\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/goldenspikemon.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/goldenspikemon.jpg 600w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/goldenspikemon-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><br \/>\n<em><strong>August 1, 2000:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/gosp\/learn\/historyculture\/four-special-spikes.htm\">Golden Spike National Historic Park<\/a>, Promontory Summit, Utah. (Yup, been there.)
