They found a sinkhole earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehawkeye.com\/news\/20190511\/butting-heads-over-cascade-bridge\"><em>Burlington Hawk Eye<\/em> story\u00a0earlier this month<\/a>\u00a0pegs the cost of <em>repair<\/em> at $7 million and <em>replacement<\/em> at $3 million, the latter a much lower number <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehawkeye.com\/news\/20180611\/council-likely-to-reject-cascade-bridge-money-for-fears-that-itd-break-bank\">than quoted in 2018<\/a>. If those numbers are correct, the clearest answer in my opinion is to tear the 1896 bridge down and build a new one.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Hawk Eye<\/em> now reports the Burlington city council is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehawkeye.com\/news\/20190518\/sinkhole-fixed-franchise-fee-in-play-to-pay-for-cascade-bridge\">considering a utility franchise fee<\/a> \u2014 replacing a local-option sales tax \u2014 to pay for the bridge. The last attempt to set a franchise fee was overwhelmingly rejected by voters, the earlier\u00a0<em>Hawk Eye<\/em> story said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The hole in the Great River Road isn&#8217;t getting any better.
