{"id":11085,"date":"2019-06-21T10:00:56","date_gmt":"2019-06-21T15:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=11085"},"modified":"2019-06-15T00:51:14","modified_gmt":"2019-06-15T05:51:14","slug":"whataburger-edged-closer-to-iowa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2019\/06\/whataburger-edged-closer-to-iowa\/","title":{"rendered":"Whataburger edged closer to Iowa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The news last week that famous Texas restaurant chain Whataburger has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwtx.com\/content\/news\/Whataburger-sold-511301521.html\">sold by the founding family<\/a> to an investment firm, and associated hand-wringing about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texasmonthly.com\/food\/whataburger-potential-sale-expansion\/\">what an expansion could do<\/a> to quality, made me think of a blog post <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2013\/03\/whataburger-trolls-40-of-the-big-12\/\">I made in 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 85% of Whataburger&#8217;s locations are in Texas. Six years ago, the northernmost locations were in Tulsa and Stillwater. But since then, the chain has moved northward&#8230;to suburban Tulsa, <a href=\"http:\/\/moreclaremore.com\/event\/whataburger-grand-opening-celebration\/\">specifically, Claremore<\/a>. Claremore has its place in Americana as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.willrogers.com\/learn-about-will\">home of Will Rogers<\/a> and the setting of the play that became \u2014 apply vocals as necessary \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/visitclaremore.org\/194\/Rodgers-Hammersteins-Oklahoma\">OOOOOOOklahoma!<\/a>*<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d have pinned Kansas City or Lawrence as the most likely future collision of Whataburger and Culver&#8217;s, but it turns out there are a dozen Culver&#8217;s in Texas already. (I did not look closely enough to see if any were within eyeshot of each other.)<\/p>\n<p>*Of which a <a href=\"https:\/\/oklahoman.com\/article\/5633544\/photos-and-video-reimagined-oklahoma-coming-soon-to-okc-wins-best-revival-of-a-musical-makes-history-at-the-tony-awards\">&#8220;darker, deconstructed version&#8221;<\/a> just won a Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.
