The reporter spent &#8220;a day in the deep-fried life&#8221; for the first time and fills up at a couple classic food stands (though does not get the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esquire.com\/food-drink\/restaurants\/a15202\/double-bacon-corn-dog-iowa-11446179\/\">double bacon corn dog<\/a>, which, again, God bless America).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"166\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?url=https%3A\/\/api.soundcloud.com\/tracks\/665102825&amp;color=ff5500\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Next, there&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/graphics\/2019\/lifestyle\/vacation-ideas\/things-to-do-in-des-moines\/\">lifestyle story from the <i>Washington Post<\/i><\/a>\u00a0announcing that avocado toast has made it to the heartland, and first-class hotels can be had for only (only!) $189.<\/p>\n<p><em>Des Moines, or DSM to locals,<\/em> (Really? \u2014 Ed.)<em> is a laid-back, easily navigable city with an impressive network of bike trails, one of the most beautiful and interesting capitol buildings I&#8217;ve toured and an emerging food and cocktail scene.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In fairness, the <i>Post<\/i> also has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/food\/theres-always-butter-the-iowa-state-fairs-butter-sculptor-on-cows-elvis-and-politicians\/2019\/08\/13\/24f2e958-b939-11e9-b3b4-2bb69e8c4e39_story.html\">a very nice profile of\/Q&#038;A with Sarah Pratt<\/a>, the woman behind the butter cow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With all the national media in Iowa this week, we were bound to get some dispatches from the frontier-style stories.
