{"id":11317,"date":"2019-09-12T10:00:36","date_gmt":"2019-09-12T15:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=11317"},"modified":"2019-09-11T18:13:17","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T23:13:17","slug":"orlando-columnist-still-really-really-hates-iowa-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2019\/09\/orlando-columnist-still-really-really-hates-iowa-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Orlando columnist still really, really hates Iowa State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During Conferencepocalypse, <em>Orlando Sentinel<\/em> columnist Mike Bianchi <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.orlandosentinel.com\/2010-07-24\/sports\/os-bianchi-ucf-cusa-0725-20100724_1_bcs-era-college-football-sec-media-days\">questioned the justification of multiple non-blue-blood teams<\/a>, including Iowa State, in major-college football. Well, more than questioned. He railed to anyone who would listen (and those of us in existential angst) that teams that &#8220;could not compete&#8221; should be expelled in favor of the University of Central Florida \u2014 a place that barely over 30 years prior was known as\u00a0Florida Technical University and didn&#8217;t have a football program.<\/p>\n<p>In 2014, as the realignment dust was settling, Bianchi outright called on the SEC to &#8220;get[] rid of the irrelevant schools&#8221; \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/sports\/os-mike-bianchi-saturday-circus-0607-20140606,0,4432256.column\">specifically, Ole Miss and Mississippi State<\/a> \u2014 and, purely on the basis of media markets and &#8220;growth potential&#8221;, pick up one team that less than 20 years prior was playing in Division I-AA and another that 20 years prior didn&#8217;t exist. That came four years after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forwhomthecowbelltolls.com\/2011\/9\/9\/2413892\/mike-bianchi-believes-that-ucf-deserves-to-be-a-bcs-school-over\"><em>he had apologized<\/em> to the state of Mississippi<\/a> when Mississippi State defeated a ranked Florida team in the Swamp.<\/p>\n<p>As the 2010s come to a close, Bianchi, now with the sword of UCF&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/sports\/2018\/08\/ncaa_recognizes_ucfs_national.html\">pillowy-soft alleged national championship<\/a>\u00a0at his disposal, refuses to stop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orlandosentinel.com\/sports\/mike-bianchi-commentary\/os-sp-ucf-fau-sec-lane-kiffin-20190906-7zkfe252fra5vncbx6up3mxney-story.html\">taking massive dumps on Iowa State<\/a> and its undistinguished-on-the-football-field compatriots.<\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s no secret that many of these bottom-feeding Power 5 programs are simply taking up a spot that would be better suited for UCF \u2014 a burgeoning university in a major metropolitan TV market.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>He also plays fast and loose with timelines, saying &#8220;those Power 5 leagues were formed nearly 100 years ago.&#8221; But:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/athlonsports.com\/college-football\/the-entire-complete-history-acc-realignment\">The ACC didn&#8217;t exist until 1953.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>The primordial ooze of the Pac-12 <a href=\"https:\/\/athlonsports.com\/college-football\/history-pac-12-conference-realignment\">can be traced to 1916<\/a>, but along the way, the conference ceased to exist in a pay-for-play scandal, only to be reconstituted in a way that the only university that really got screwed was Idaho.<\/li>\n<li>Texas Tech \u2014 one of his go-tos for a team that doesn&#8217;t belong \u2014 didn&#8217;t start football until 1925, was in the Border Conference along with the Arizona schools until the mid-&#8217;50s, and then shifted to the Southwest Conference.<\/li>\n<li>The Big 12, though it disavows the existence of anything before 1996, is for all intents and purposes a descendant of the Big Six\/Seven\/Eight. I&#8217;ll grant that. But I&#8217;ll also point out that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Archives\/1994\/02\/23\/Political-fallout-could-follow-four-schools-defection-from-SWC\/1161761979600\/\">politicking in the Texas Legislature<\/a>\u00a0as SWC schools fought for lifeboat space is how it got to where it was in 2010.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the 2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/best-colleges\/rankings\/national-universities?_mode=table\">U.S. News &amp; World Report rankings<\/a>, UCF is tied for the 165th-best national university in the country, lower than every member of a power conference except Louisville, Mississippi State and Texas Tech. (Iowa State is 119th.) If there is any bulwark against the view I was seeing a decade ago (and Bianchi continues to trumpet) about <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2012\/08\/college-conferences\/\">how it is all about the football eyeballs<\/a>, it&#8217;s that UCF remains where it is.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During Conferencepocalypse, Orlando Sentinel columnist Mike Bianchi questioned the justification of multiple non-blue-blood teams, including Iowa State, in major-college football.
