It&#8217;s 700 to Mexico City. It&#8217;s the end of January, and it&#8217;s 84 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Here, at the doorstep to Mexico, <a href=\"http:\/\/interstate-guide.com\/i-035.html\">Interstate Highway 35<\/a> finally rolls to a stop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Mexborder.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1179\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Mexborder.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Mexborder.jpg 600w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Mexborder-300x120.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Four stoplights separate I-35 from International Bridge No. 2<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no &#8220;End&#8221; sign, just the freeway itself coming from a depressed grade up to stoplights with overhead and ground-based signs pointing to the bridges or US 83&#8217;s journey farther south on this side of the Rio Grande. On this day, the humongous Mexican and American flags were not flying to delineate the border, but the <em>casas de cambio<\/em> serve about the same purpose.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/35and59and83.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1180\" title=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/35and59and83.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"282\" height=\"240\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>I-35 only goes to one of these places.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>US 59 shields on the big signs (see above) imply that route starts at the same place as I-35, but all regular ones have &#8220;To&#8221; above them and the first shield set heading north doesn&#8217;t have 59. Its true beginning is two miles from here.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen minutes later, it&#8217;s time to head north. Two numbers can take you to Iowa \u2014 one fast, one slow \u2014 and one of those goes all the way into Canada. I&#8217;ve now passed both US termini of US 59. However, it&#8217;s I-35 I&#8217;ll be taking north to close that gap in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>If you were to travel straight through, it would take 17\u00bd hours to get <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?saddr=laredo+tx&amp;daddr=38.56161,-95.31482+to:lamoni+ia&amp;hl=en&amp;sll=34.06503,-96.72078&amp;sspn=13.778161,14.699707&amp;geocode=Fee2owEdqqIR-iklPfmnbMBghjGRdFZJU3pAtA%3BFUpnTAIdfJxR-inDedZbZEu_hzEnIjQs0V2uCA%3BFbnaawId3K1m-ikJZYGzTMzrhzFBX43yYeJUgg&amp;mra=mru&amp;via=1&amp;t=m&amp;z=6\">from Laredo to Lamoni<\/a>.
