{"id":11785,"date":"2020-01-23T10:00:34","date_gmt":"2020-01-23T16:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=11785"},"modified":"2020-01-21T00:58:41","modified_gmt":"2020-01-21T06:58:41","slug":"utah-keeps-powering-past-iowa-with-nevada-on-its-tail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2020\/01\/utah-keeps-powering-past-iowa-with-nevada-on-its-tail\/","title":{"rendered":"Utah keeps powering past Iowa, with Nevada on its tail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The depopulation of rural Iowa is now a problem for the National Guard.<\/p>\n<p>In the adjutant general&#8217;s &#8220;Condition of the Guard&#8221; message to the Iowa Legislature <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/subject\/news\/government\/deployments-increasing-national-guard-major-general-ben-corell-leader-tells-iowa-lawmakers-20200116?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+GazetteOnlineLocalNews+%28TheGazette.com+Local+News%29\">earlier this month, he said<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cI can\u2019t continue to have quality infrastructure where I\u2019m pouring tax dollars from federal and state funds into a facility that I can\u2019t keep manned because I can\u2019t recruit from the local area because the pool of people just doesn\u2019t exist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While much of rural Iowa keeps getting emptier, Salt Lake City and Las Vegas keep getting fuller. Utah, which squeaked ahead of Iowa <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2018\/12\/utah-edges-iowa-in-population-ahead-of-schedule\/\">in the 2018 census estimates<\/a>, is continuing a rapid trajectory upward. It was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/news\/politics\/2019\/12\/30\/utah-is-nations-fastest\/\">fastest-growing state of the decade.<\/a>\u00a0The 2019 estimate for Nevada is higher than Iowa&#8217;s 2010 population, and with one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhl.com\/news\/vegas-golden-knights-exceeded-all-expectations-in-inaugural-season\/c-297809252\">pro-sports franchise activated<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ktnv.com\/sports\/raiders\/vegas-sportsbooks-offer-early-betting-on-inaugural-raiders-season-in-southern-nevada\">another one on the way<\/a>, the only competition Iowa can provide is &#8230; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcrg.com\/content\/news\/Iowa-Racing-and-Gaming-Commission-reports-September-sports-betting-revenue-563159871.html\">gambling on those sporting events<\/a> (with a pittance for a taxpayer take).<\/p>\n<p>Iowa&#8217;s population only rose by about 109,000 in the decade \u2014 or slightly more people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2019\/popest-nation.html\">than North Carolina added<\/a> <em>in fiscal 2019 alone<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11786\" alt=\"ia_nv_ut_popest19\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ia_nv_ut_popest19.jpg\" width=\"515\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ia_nv_ut_popest19.jpg 515w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/ia_nv_ut_popest19-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 515px) 100vw, 515px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The caucus and football seasons inadvertently provide three examples of population bleed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>U.S. Rep. Eric Swalwell of California, temporarily a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, left as a child in the 1980s (not as part of the farm crisis, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/opinion\/columnists\/kathie-obradovich\/2018\/04\/09\/congressman-eric-swalwell-iowa-2020-dad-fired-algona-police\/498643002\/\">because his dad was fired<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>U.S. Rep. Katie Porter, another California Democrat, was <a href=\"http:\/\/iowainformer.com\/politics\/2018\/11\/former-iowa-law-professor-katie-porter-elected-to-congress-in-california\/\">born in Fort Dodge, taught for a while at the University of Iowa,<\/a> and then, like so many other Iowans, moved west for good.<\/li>\n<li>Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/sports\/college\/iowa-state\/randy-peterson\/2019\/12\/13\/joe-burrow-possible-heisman-trophy-trek-started-ames-iowa\/4398775002\/\">was born in Ames<\/a>, technically the third Heisman winner born in this state. But he left when he was 4, because his dad (a football assistant coach) took a job in southeast Ohio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since 1970, Iowa has lost three seats in Congress (1973, 1993, 2013) and California has gained 15.
