{"id":12134,"date":"2020-05-19T10:00:19","date_gmt":"2020-05-19T15:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=12134"},"modified":"2020-05-19T23:49:25","modified_gmt":"2020-05-20T04:49:25","slug":"centerville-knoxville-pella-losing-their-newspapers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2020\/05\/centerville-knoxville-pella-losing-their-newspapers\/","title":{"rendered":"Centerville, Knoxville, Pella losing their newspapers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <em>Centerville Daily Iowegian, Pella Chronicle<\/em>, and <em>Knoxville News-Sentinel, <\/em>all of which have been around for about a century and a half,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/whotv.com\/news\/coronavirus\/iowa-impacts\/regional-newspapers-merge-in-covid-19-economy\/\">have become victims of the coronavirus.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The first, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyiowegian.com\/opinion\/columns\/the-end-of-the-monday-paper\/article_33f95402-363d-11e9-8e5f-fff331991f05.html\">stopped publishing a Monday paper<\/a> 14 months ago and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyiowegian.com\/news\/local_news\/memo-to-readers-iowegian-will-cease-thursday-print-delivery\/article_f69cf7bc-7443-11ea-baa8-33ac1935bf61.html\">stopped publishing a Thursday paper<\/a> six weeks ago, will be folded into the <em>Ottumwa Courier<\/em><del>, a daily<\/del>.\u00a0The other two will go to the <em>Oskaloosa Herald<\/em>, which became a twice-weekly paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oskaloosa.com\/news\/local_news\/oskaloosa-herald-discontinues-thursday-publication-next-week\/article_09186c86-79b3-11ea-be5b-4748ac264ce1.html\">after also cutting Thursdays<\/a>\u00a0at the beginning of April. At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oskaloosa.com\/news\/local_news\/van-engelenhoven-to-retire-as-herald-publisher\/article_3d455a0c-95fe-11ea-957e-bf2187a0c78f.html\">the <em>Herald&#8217;s<\/em> publisher is retiring<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This means that Iowa&#8217;s 39th, 57th, and 69th-largest communities (based on 2018 estimates), and two county seats, will not have their own newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Since the beginning of 1989, the <em>Iowegian<\/em> billed itself as &#8220;the newspaper that cares about Appanoose County.&#8221; Sadly, caring doesn&#8217;t keep the lights on.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: I have been told that the <em>Ottumwa Courier<\/em> isn&#8217;t a daily newspaper anymore. The most recent circulation I can find for it is just above 6000.
