I had a little snag after exiting I-10 to get back on 610 to reach US 290, but it worked out. It was much easier to shift five lanes over to get to 290 this time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/610exit20.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1237\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/610exit20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"460\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/610exit20.jpg 460w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/610exit20-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>The north interchange of I-610 with US 59. The distance back to El Paso on I-10 is about equal to I-80 from the Wyoming\/Nebraska line to the Mississippi River.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The US 290\/TX 6 corridor to College Station is all four-lane now. The newness of the pavement (and the 2005 map) show this was not the case when we had come down for the Houston Bowl.<\/p>\n<p>I tripped myself up by thinking I could go to Washington-on-the-Brazos before the basketball game. In retrospect I see how foolish this was. Fortunately, I had a cushion of time, so I spun back around and hightailed it to Reed Arena to see the Iowa State women play Texas A&amp;M.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/TXIndepHall.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1240\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/TXIndepHall.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/TXIndepHall.jpg 500w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/TXIndepHall-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>This &#8220;unfinished building owned by a gunsmith&#8221; was the site of the signing of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lsjunction.com\/docs\/tdoi.htm\">Texas Declaration of Independence<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I had about a half-hour trip back from College Station to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tpwd.state.tx.us\/spdest\/findadest\/parks\/washington_on_the_brazos\/overview.phtml\">Washington-on-the-Brazos<\/a> and only an hour left for the visitors center and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.birthplaceoftexas.com\/StarOfRepublicMuseum.htm\">Star of the Republic Museum<\/a>. I actually got most of it done, except I didn&#8217;t get to see the movie or tour Independence Hall. The museum includes the oldest known Lone Star flag. The grounds stayed open after 5 so I got to wander around the fields that used to be the town.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/WashTXPO.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1241\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/WashTXPO.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"78\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/WashTXPO.jpg 450w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/WashTXPO-300x52.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>About all that&#8217;s left of Washington, Texas, today is the post office.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I returned to College Station for the night to engage in a part of vacation I usually don&#8217;t have to worry about: Figuring out how to cram everything and a winter coat <em>back<\/em> into a suitcase for a plane flight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post covers the rest of my Sunday outside of the basketball game.
