Evelyn Birkby died Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.lib.uiowa.edu\/islandora\/object\/ui%3Abirkby\">UI has a collection<\/a>\u00a0of old photos and columns. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uipress.uiowa.edu\/people\/evelyn-birkby\">UI Press&#8217; entry<\/a> about her says\u00a0she was &#8220;a writer and broadcaster for KMA Radio and\u00a0<em>Kitchen-Klatter<\/em>, part of the longest-running homemaker program in the history of radio.&#8221; The Shenandoah <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kmaland.com\/news\/evelyn-birkby-passes-at-101\/article_70914d5e-69c4-11eb-865e-9f9fa090d8c7.html\">radio station&#8217;s obituary<\/a> calls her &#8220;the last of the great KMA radio homemakers.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kmaland.com\/news\/remembering-a-kmaland-homemaker-up-a-country-lane\/article_6480b454-6a42-11eb-936d-937b4dc460e2.html\">See also this story.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the time of her death, Birkby&#8217;s columns covered 40% of Iowa&#8217;s time as a state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2019 I took note of a longtime columnist in southwestern Iowa who was hanging it up after seven decades, at the age of 100.
