UPDATE\/CORRECTION 6\/25\/21: Current plans leave the intersection intact at the bridge&#8217;s completion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Here is the first part of a list of major projects or interesting things I saw in the <a href=\"https:\/\/iowadot.gov\/program_management\/DRAFT_2022-2026_5YrProg.pdf\">draft five-year construction plan<\/a>, released after the Iowa Transportation Commission&#8217;s May meeting. The highway stuff begins about halfway through the PDF.<\/p>\n<p>Not mentioned below are the continuation of the I-80\/380 interchange replacement, <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2021\/05\/council-bluffs-dual-divided-freeway-completion-this-week\/\">I-29\/480 interchange<\/a>, or future redesign (again) of the northeast mixmaster in Des Moines.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The draft plan does not include mileage for any project.<\/li>\n<li>The I-74 bridge is to be completed this calendar year with demolition of the old ones next year. The final piece of the arch of the Illinois-bound bridge was set May 5; here&#8217;s a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/qctimes.com\/news\/local\/watch-now-barb-ickes-was-live-as-the-keystone-was-put-in-place-the-iowa\/video_5fe1db8c-4bcc-5565-9152-c14b1f222b07.html\">video from the\u00a0Quad-City Times<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>US 30:\n<ul>\n<li>Four-lane in Tama County plus the IA 21 interchange in 2022, i.e. hopefully finished by midsummer next year.<\/li>\n<li>Four-lane in Benton County in 2022-23.<\/li>\n<li>New exit at R70, 2 miles east of I-35, in 2023-24, slightly extending the controlled-access portion. The <em>Nevada Journal<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nevadaiowajournal.com\/news\/20200324\/board-of-supervisors-review-proposed-design-changes-for-us-30-580th-ave-interchange\">wrote about it last March<\/a>. This and the next item have been discussed for nearly a decade; see these blog posts from <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2015\/11\/story-county-opposes-closing-us-30-intersections\/\">2015<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2017\/12\/dot-wants-us-30-interchange-at-r70\/\">2017<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>A new bridge, <em>but not a new exit<\/em>, between S14 and 6th Street (<a href=\"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/ends\/ia133.html\">former IA 133<\/a>) in Nevada in 2023. <del>This will close both intersections of those roads with 30.<\/del> (UPDATE: 6th Street will stay open.) \u00a0The Nevada City Council endorsed last year (story: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amestrib.com\/story\/news\/local\/2020\/08\/19\/nevada-iowa-council-approves-airport-road-interchange\/5602790002\/\">Ames Tribune<\/a><\/em>) after un-endorsing it in 2015. It&#8217;s based on promise\/hope of a future exit at Airport Road, which is not in the program yet.<\/li>\n<li>Missouri Valley bypass programmed for bridge and grading later, with paving likely in 2027.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>I-80:\n<ul>\n<li>Six-laning from <del>Alice&#8217;s Road<\/del> Grand Prairie Parkway to Jordan Creek Parkway, 2023-25<\/li>\n<li>Six-laning from where it currently ends just west of Herbert Hoover Highway to West Branch, through 2025. The first part of that started this spring with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.iowadot.gov\/newsandinfo\/2021\/04\/westbound-i-80-entrance-ramp-from-herbert-hoover-highway-northeastjohnson-county-road-f-44-exit-249-.html\">closure of a ramp <\/a>at the HHH exit.<\/li>\n<li>Around the IA 38 exit, including redoing it with space for the <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2018\/10\/ia-38-exit-proposals-and-the-ultimate-lane\/\">ULTIMATE LANE<\/a>, in 2023<\/li>\n<li>New Raccoon River bridges near the De Soto exit in 2022\/2024. <a href=\"https:\/\/iowadot.gov\/pim\/documents\/060419I80DallasPD1.pdf\">The PDF shows<\/a> &#8220;bridge for 6 pave for 4&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Continued replacement of the North Skunk River bridges, which is also\u00a0&#8220;bridge for 6 pave for 4&#8221;, in 2022.<\/li>\n<li>The IA 146 exit, also a\u00a0&#8220;bridge for 6 pave for 4&#8221;, in 2022; the original eastbound lanes are in the space for the new median<\/li>\n<li>Paving, with bridge widening, between University and Douglas avenues in 2025-26. This is through the Living History Farms area. I figure this is to turn I-35\/80 from three through lanes with a dedicated exit lane to four through lanes with a dedicated exit lane.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Improvement&#8221;, which I suspect means replacement,\u00a0of the westbound Underwood rest area in 2025<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Improvement&#8221; of the eastbound Iowa County rest area, which used to be a welcome center in the middle of the state, in 2024<\/li>\n<li>Any chance future five-year plans could specify &#8220;6-lane&#8221; or &#8220;prepare\/bridge for 6 pave for 4&#8221;?
