It had been a GateHouse paper, then a Gannett paper following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2019\/08\/05\/gannett-gatehouse-media-new-media-investment-group\/1902550001\/\">former&#8217;s purchase of the latter<\/a> (but taking the latter&#8217;s name).<\/p>\n<p>Nearly two dozen small papers in the Midwest, including the <em>Reporter<\/em> and the <em>Nebraska City News-Press<\/em> across the river, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cookcountynews-herald.com\/articles\/a-renewed-focus-on-community-cherryroad-media-inc-expands-by-20-publications\/\">were sold to CherryRoad Media<\/a>. CherryRoad filled in with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/cherryroad-media-inc-launches-new-newspaper-the-rainy-lake-gazette-located-in-international-falls-minnesota-301339903.html\">new newspaper for International Falls<\/a>, Minnesota, a month after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minnpost.com\/twin-cities-business\/2021\/06\/minnesota-loses-another-newspaper-as-international-falls-journal-ceases-publication\/\">that city&#8217;s 111-year-old paper shut down<\/a>. (It owns a paper in Grand Marais, WAY up there in the Boundary Waters area and 2\/3 of the way from Duluth to the Canada border.)<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Reporter<\/em> was an outlier in the &#8220;new Gannett&#8221;.
