{"id":13959,"date":"2022-10-07T10:00:49","date_gmt":"2022-10-07T15:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=13959"},"modified":"2022-10-04T21:59:47","modified_gmt":"2022-10-05T02:59:47","slug":"meanwhile-in-marietta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2022\/10\/meanwhile-in-marietta\/","title":{"rendered":"Meanwhile in Marietta"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a tiny parcel of the Marshalltown school district, half a square mile, that isn&#8217;t directly connected to the rest of the district. It is connected via what, in the Iowa legislative redistricting process, is called &#8220;point contiguity&#8221; \u2014 that is, the parcels meet at a junction but do not have a land connection. That&#8217;s not allowed in either redistricting or school district boundary drawing.<\/p>\n<p>How did it get there, then? It was grandfathered in from 1946.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/maps\/marietta.png\" width=\"521\" height=\"284\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The middle feature circled in blue is Marietta No. 4 school, one of thousands of such township schools once peppered methodically across the state. The school was discontinued in 1946, which was a formality, as the <em>Times-Republican<\/em> article about it reported it had not been active for a decade. The territory was divided between the Albion and Lamoille districts.<\/p>\n<p>Lamoille later merged with State Center, and Albion merged with Marshalltown. The north half of the southwest quarter of Section 23 \u2014 the rectangle with &#8220;J.T. Packer&#8221; \u2014 went with Albion to Marshalltown, although it&#8217;s surrounded by State Center\/West Marshall territory.<\/p>\n<p>While looking in to that, I found out a few more things about the area that has changed in the past decade.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Marietta became a ghost town after losing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesrepublican.com\/news\/todays-news\/2019\/04\/how-marshalltown-became-a-railroad-center\/\">courthouse to Marshalltown in 1859<\/a>. It never had the city grid seen in the 1885 plat book. There used to be a large wooden marker in a field, that I unfortunately never got a picture of before it vanished. The only trace is on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/@42.0825725,-93.0005637,3a,81.8y,265.25h,89.65t\/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sNDSNNrJ8TitaE3xUleqqVA!2e0!7i3328!8i1664\">Google Street View from 2009<\/a>, where we can see &#8220;Marietta, Iowa \/ First \/ Marshall County \/ Court House \/ [illegible]&#8221;. Note the land owned by Robert M. Timmons just to the north, namesake of Timmons Grove county park and campground.<\/li>\n<li>The Hartland Friends Church, the western circled site, was demolished in the 2013-14 school year, according to aerial photos. The Hixsite church, the eastern site, was demolished just last year, between August and November (aerial photos\/Google Street View). Quakers are a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/iagenweb.org\/history\/qoi\/QOIPt1Chp8.htm\">part of Iowa history<\/a> \u2014 Herbert Hoover was born a Quaker, and there&#8217;s William Penn University in Oskaloosa \u2014 and Marshall County &#8220;became the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/45220343\">largest center of Norwegian Quakerism<\/a> in the United States.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Albion, just north of Marietta, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesrepublican.com\/news\/todays-news\/2021\/06\/rail-trail-festival-to-make-debut-in-albion\/\">renamed its annual festival<\/a> the Rail-Trail Festival, after its previous name was related to the school building <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2018\/12\/albion-school-is-gone\/\">demolished in 2018<\/a>. The &#8220;rail&#8221; is the <a href=\"https:\/\/iowadot.gov\/iowarail\/pdfs\/IARR.pdf\">Iowa River Railroad<\/a>, which abandoned nearly its entire trackline in 2012 except for the segment between Ackley and an ethanol plant near US 20. The &#8220;trail&#8221; is the hope of converting the right-of-way into a bike path. IA 330 had an overpass above the railroad until 2002, when it was replaced with an at-grade crossing, and those gates have been removed.<\/li>\n<li>The IA 330 at-grade RRX just north of the E41\/S75 junction, which in my experience has been awful for decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesrepublican.com\/news\/todays-news\/2021\/05\/highway-330-to-close-temporarily\/\">finally got replaced last year<\/a>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a tiny parcel of the Marshalltown school district, half a square mile, that isn&#8217;t directly connected to the rest of the district.
