{"id":14971,"date":"2023-07-19T10:00:41","date_gmt":"2023-07-19T15:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=14971"},"modified":"2023-07-05T18:52:53","modified_gmt":"2023-07-05T23:52:53","slug":"boone-portion-of-us-30-has-freeway-potential","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2023\/07\/boone-portion-of-us-30-has-freeway-potential\/","title":{"rendered":"Boone portion of US 30 has freeway potential"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The DOT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.iowadot.gov\/pim\/2023\/06\/proposed-improvements-to-us-30-intersections-to-be-discussed-in-boone-on-june-20-2023.html\">had a public meeting June 23<\/a> about long-term plans to convert US 30 between Boone and the Lincoln Way exits into a full freeway. This is in keeping with plans to do the same on 30 <a href=\"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2020\/09\/nevada-city-council-favors-west-interchange\/\">between Ames and Nevada<\/a>, and on <a href=\"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2022\/01\/waverly-janesville-road-will-be-upgraded\/\">US 218 between Janesville and Waverly<\/a>. It&#8217;s also likely the follow-up <a href=\"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2019\/08\/a-mystery-meeting-for-us-30\/\">to a meeting in 2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/iowadot.gov\/pim\/documents\/062023US30BoonePD3.pdf\">three potential interchange locations (PDF)<\/a>: The four-way stop at Story Street on the south side of Boone, R27 southeast of Boone, and V Avenue west of Lincoln Way. Those three exits and what looks like a complete set of frontage roads on both sides would replace 11 at-grade intersections. That includes a couple intersections <a href=\"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2023\/05\/us-30-intersection-by-united-school-to-partially-close\/\">that have already been modified<\/a> to eliminate some traffic movements.<\/p>\n<p>Since late 2010, Story Street has been the only place US 30 traffic <em>must<\/em> come to a full stop between Jefferson and Mount Vernon, and since 2019 it&#8217;s the only place between Jefferson and Clinton. The United school is one of two places I know of with a &#8220;School Speed Limit When Flashing&#8221; of 55 mph, and the other is at Colo.<\/p>\n<p>Conversion to a full freeway would be very expensive and take a long time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The DOT had a public meeting June 23 about long-term plans to convert US 30 between Boone and the Lincoln Way exits into a full freeway.
