{"id":15193,"date":"2023-11-29T10:00:17","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T16:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=15193"},"modified":"2024-01-24T00:17:39","modified_gmt":"2024-01-24T06:17:39","slug":"misspellings-and-errors-since-june-29","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2023\/11\/misspellings-and-errors-since-june-29\/","title":{"rendered":"Misspellings and errors since June 29"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just because I haven&#8217;t been a professional copy editor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2023\/07\/will-proofread-for-food\/\">for five months<\/a> doesn&#8217;t mean I stopped seeing typos and errors &#8230; everywhere.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The most galling one, since I saw it every week for months, is that the IowaWORKS pop-up screen at login misspells &#8220;reemployment&#8221; as &#8220;reemployement&#8221;.\n<ul>\n<li>The lack of hyphen there is not officially an error. An Associated Press Stylebook update in 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poynter.org\/reporting-editing\/2019\/ap-changes-guidance-on-the-hyphen-again\/\">removed hyphens from many common, longtime phrases<\/a> and also after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/apstylebook\/posts\/we-no-longer-hyphenate-double-e-combinations-with-the-prefixes-pre-and-re-thats-\/2306036666086073\/\">the prefixes &#8220;pre-&#8221; and &#8220;re-&#8220;<\/a> when the next letter is an <em>e<\/em>. It&#8217;s stupid and confusing, as are many AP style changes since 2017 (but God forbid we use a serial comma).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>My new health insurance card misspells &#8220;benefits&#8221; on the back.<\/li>\n<li>Before the Iowa State Fair, KWWL offered a &#8220;sneak peak&#8221; at the butter cow.<\/li>\n<li>During the fair, KCCI&#8217;s locator map showed Iowa Highway 46, which hasn&#8217;t existed since 1998, on East 30th Street.<\/li>\n<li>The Associated Press \u2014 THE ASSOCIATED PRESS!! \u2014 also <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/womens-pro-hockey-pwhpa-sites-94d7ac871b3540c2c338c8e34d3b54e5\">committed the &#8220;sneak peak&#8221; error<\/a> \u2014 IN THE HEADLINE!! Too much attention on deleting hyphens, I guess.<\/li>\n<li>KWWL misspelled &#8220;Old Threshers&#8221; as &#8220;Old Threshures&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>KCRG misspelled &#8220;pricier&#8221; as &#8220;priceier&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>KCRG misspelled &#8220;September&#8221; as &#8220;Septempter&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Politico wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2023\/09\/19\/project-2025-trump-reagan-00115811\">&#8220;Authorization for Use of Military Use&#8221;<\/a> instead of &#8220;Force&#8221; for the AUMF acronym.<\/li>\n<li><em>Both<\/em> KWWL and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcrg.com\/2023\/09\/30\/occupants-displaced-after-cedar-rapids-fire\/\">KCRG said<\/a>\u00a0in their broadcasts that a house fire in Cedar Rapids was on &#8220;East Avenue NW&#8221; instead of E Avenue NW.<\/li>\n<li>Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/10\/17\/retail-politics-2024-election-00121851\">wrote &#8220;stepped foot&#8221;<\/a> instead of &#8220;set foot&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/theathletic.com\/4971844\/2023\/10\/17\/iowa-football-minnesota-notes\/\">This sentence from the Athletic<\/a> dropped at least one word: &#8220;His successor was Bob Bowlsby left Iowa in 2006.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>KCRG&#8217;s football score ticker called Loras the Durhawks instead of Duhawks. <em>(Du. Du Hawks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W3q8Od5qJio\">Du Hawks Mich.<\/a> \u2014 Ed.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The Des Moines Register<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/elections\/presidential\/caucus\/2023\/10\/22\/tim-scott-iowa-caucus-israel-ukraine-speaker-fight\/71274664007\/\">misspelled U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota&#8217;s<\/a> last name as Emmert.<\/li>\n<li>KCRG covered a &#8220;Mustangs vs. Mustangs&#8221; game on Oct. 27, except that on the video board, it was the Mount Vernon &#8220;Mustans&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>This happened in the Oct. 27 print edition of the\u00a0<em>Register<\/em>:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15269\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/dcgheadline.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"90\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/dcgheadline.jpg 430w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/dcgheadline-300x63.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>KCRG misspelled &#8220;antisemitic&#8221; as &#8220;antisemetic&#8221;. (Regarding the lack of a hyphen, see the note at top and an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/APStylebook\/status\/1385687075635204100\">AP Stylebook tweet from April 2021<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<li>KGAN misspelled Fairleigh Dickinson (Iowa WBB&#8217;s first opponent) as &#8220;Dickenson&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>The envelope for Iowa PBS&#8217;s monthly newsletter put an apostrophe in &#8220;Iowans&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Pinseekers, &#8220;Iowa&#8217;s first year-round golf entertainment facility&#8221; used &#8220;sneak peak&#8221; in a TV commercial.<\/li>\n<li>WQAD <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwqc.com\/2023\/11\/12\/two-roadways-southeastern-iowa-made-list-iowa-state-patrols-top-6-high-crash-locations\/\">wrote &#8220;Donaldson&#8221; instead of &#8220;Donnellson&#8221;<\/a> in a story about top vehicle crash areas in southeast Iowa.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anyone interested in a proofreader?<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE 1\/24\/24: In a July story, <a href=\"https:\/\/nonpareilonline.com\/news\/local\/government-politics\/counties-across-iowa-use-a-variety-of-options-to-elect-county-supervisors\/article_e23367b8-17a9-11ee-ab35-73970963cc66.html\">the <em>Council Bluffs Nonpareil<\/em> had a sentence<\/a> where the number of Iowa counties added up to 105 instead of 99 and misspelled Linn as Lynn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just because I haven&#8217;t been a professional copy editor\u00a0for five months doesn&#8217;t mean I stopped seeing typos and errors &#8230; everywhere.
