{"id":15348,"date":"2024-01-12T10:00:26","date_gmt":"2024-01-12T16:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=15348"},"modified":"2024-01-12T01:17:43","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T07:17:43","slug":"southern-benton-county-lost-its-newspaper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2024\/01\/southern-benton-county-lost-its-newspaper\/","title":{"rendered":"Southern Benton County lost its newspaper"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Publication of a newspaper dedicated to the interests of Belle Plaine and southern Benton County <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southeastiowaunion.com\/se-iowa-union-hometown-current\/star-press-union-ceases-publication\/\">ceased at the end of 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Belle Plaine Union <\/em>had that name for the overwhelming majority of its life. The <em>Blairstown Press<\/em> and the <em>Benton County Star<\/em> merged into the <em>South Benton Star-Press<\/em> on February 13, 1969.<\/p>\n<p>The two papers were combined into the <em>Star Press Union<\/em> as the calendar changed to 2009. A full history of the <em>Union<\/em> was <a href=\"https:\/\/belleplaine.advantage-preservation.com\/viewer\/?fn=the_belle_plaine_union_usa_iowa_belle_plaine_20081231_english_1&amp;df=1&amp;dt=10\">printed in the final edition of the paper<\/a> on December 31, 2008.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2002, ownership of the paper changed from Gannett to the Gazette (under the <em>Southeast Iowa Union<\/em>). I did page design for it for a short while. However, its last edition was Christmas week.<\/p>\n<p>Archives of the paper(s) and predecessors through 2016 are on two different Advantage Preservation sites.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blairstown.advantage-preservation.com\/\">One is for Blairstown (1919-90)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/belleplaine.advantage-preservation.com\/\">one is for Belle Plaine (1866-2016)<\/a> that also has the 1982-2008 <em>Star-Press<\/em> archives (an eight-year overlap for some reason). Weirdly, the latter also has six months of the <em>Fontanelle Observer<\/em> (July-December 1988), three months of the <em>Preston Times<\/em> (April-June 1993), and two weeks of the September 1972 <em>Bedford Times-Press<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Publication of a newspaper dedicated to the interests of Belle Plaine and southern Benton County ceased at the end of 2023.
