Six decades later, that school is in danger of closing.<\/p>\n<p>Iowa City has put Hills Elementary on the chopping block for budget reasons. Stories: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcrg.com\/video\/2024\/02\/28\/hills-elementary-school-iowa-city-facing-closure\/\">KCRG<\/a> (video), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kwwl.com\/news\/iowa-city\/iowa-city-school-district-to-consider-retiring-hills-elementary-school-at-tuesday-board-meeting\/article_acd60fe6-d5a7-11ee-ab08-4b775460a079.html\">KWWL<\/a>.\u00a0KCRG notes that more than 40% of the student body is Hispanic. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyiowan.com\/2024\/02\/27\/parents-students-against-potential-closure-of-iowa-city-schools-hills-elementary\/\">The <em>Daily Iowan<\/em> reports<\/a> that closing the school would save the district $1.6 million. The <em>DI<\/em> also says that <a href=\"https:\/\/dailyiowan.com\/2024\/02\/21\/iowa-city-schools-to-transition-from-junior-high-to-middle-school-model\/\">Iowa City&#8217;s grade structure is changing<\/a> from junior highs (grades 7-8) to middle schools (grade 6-8), which frees up space for Hills students at other sites.<\/p>\n<p>The board will make its decision March 26.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The school building in Hills was constructed in 1965, just before the town was attached to the Iowa City school district.
