{"id":15717,"date":"2024-11-01T10:00:07","date_gmt":"2024-11-01T15:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=15717"},"modified":"2024-11-01T02:00:26","modified_gmt":"2024-11-01T07:00:26","slug":"fayette-lost-its-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2024\/11\/fayette-lost-its-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Fayette lost its school"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Previously, I explored how the northeast Iowa town of Fayette appeared to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2017\/02\/a-second-college-town-without-a-high-school\/\">only town in the country<\/a> that had a graduate degree program but not a high school.<\/p>\n<p>But as of last year, Fayette joined Peru, Nebraska, as a second town in the United States that has a four-year institution of higher education but no school at all.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.communitynewspapergroup.com\/oelwein_daily_register\/nfv-to-discontinue-use-of-fayette-elementary-location\/article_209d4e9d-c2d8-55b1-b815-b9fd9468cea5.html\">February 2023 article in the <em>Oelwein Daily Register<\/em><\/a>, the North Fayette Valley school district closed Fayette Elementary, which had held fourth- and fifth-graders from the pre-merger North Fayette area. Elementaries in West Union and Valley (between Clermont and Elgin) each have grades PK-3, all fourth-graders are at Valley, and fifth-graders are in the middle school.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.communitynewspapergroup.com\/oelwein_daily_register\/school-to-become-fayette-new-housing-project\/article_4265dc5c-ba3d-11ee-bb21-77f5d0213814.html\">A follow-up article last January<\/a> said the Fayette school site is being converted into apartments by the same people who converted the Quasqueton school.<\/p>\n<p>I personally think fifth grade is too young for middle school, and sixth for that matter. That&#8217;s at least somewhat what Interstate 35 schools announced in March, r<a href=\"https:\/\/www.roadrunnerpride.org\/article\/1526400\">ealigning its large singular complex in Truro<\/a> to have the elementary portion have grades K-6 and the secondary portion have grades 7-12.
