The Latin phrase per se<\/em> means “by itself” or “in itself.” Many many years ago in the English language, the alphabet ended with “&.” As Merriam-Webster says:<\/a> “When the 27th quasi-letter &<\/em> was referred to it was called & per se, and<\/em>, meaning “&<\/em> by itself (is the word) and<\/em>.'”<\/p>\n

That phrase became the word ampersand<\/em>.<\/p>\n

I mention that etymology because this happened.<\/a><\/p>\n
