All links are to PDF maps and district descriptions are approximations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/Statewide22x34_FINAL62111.pdf\">Big state map (PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/CityInsets22x34_FINAL62111.pdf\">City insets (PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>55 House districts are smaller than the basic &#8220;4&#215;4&#8221; county (572 square miles).<\/li>\n<li>So are 19 Senate districts.<\/li>\n<li>Twelve House districts don&#8217;t contain at least part of a county seat.<\/li>\n<li>Thirteen House districts take up the bulk of Des Moines and its suburbs. In the 1980s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/81House.pdf\">only 10\u00bd were needed.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Burlington, Clinton, and Mason City all were slightly larger than a House district in the 1980s but now comfortably fit into one. Dubuque was slightly larger than two but now fits in two.<\/li>\n<li>Ankeny, Clive, Marion, and Urbandale, on the other hand, now need to be split up.<\/li>\n<li>Four House districts do not have a high school: 33 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2033.pdf\">(southeast Des Moines)<\/a>, 45 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2045.pdf\">(Milford\/Grant\/Washington townships in Story County plus Ames east of Duff Avenue and south of Lincoln Way)<\/a>, 86 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2086.pdf\">(south Iowa City plus Hills)<\/a>, and 93 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2093.pdf\">(southeast Davenport\/west Bettendorf)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>House District 24 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2024.pdf\">(Page, Ringgold, Taylor, southern Montgomery counties)<\/a> has 10 high schools.<\/li>\n<li>House District 76 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2076.pdf\">(Poweshiek and most of Iowa counties)<\/a> has 11 Casey&#8217;s.<\/li>\n<li>Two House districts have 10 Casey&#8217;s: 7 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2007.pdf\">(Emmet, Winnebago, northern Kossuth counties plus Algona)<\/a> and 21 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2021.pdf\">(Adams, Union, \u00be of Cass, far eastern Pottawattamie counties)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>House districts 15 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2015.pdf\">(northwest Council Bluffs)<\/a>, 34 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2034.pdf\">(Des Moines south of I-235, east of Fleur Drive, and west of Union Avenue\/Southeast 5th Street and the Des Moines River)<\/a>, and 35 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2035.pdf\">(north-central Des Moines)<\/a> are the only ones with more McDonald&#8217;s (1, 3, and 2, respectively) than Casey&#8217;s (0).<\/li>\n<li>Ideal House district population: 30,464; double it for the Senate<\/li>\n<li>Smallest House districts: 35 followed by 36 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2036.pdf\">(northwest Des Moines)<\/a>, making Senate 18 the smallest over there.<\/li>\n<li>Three of the five smallest Senate districts are in Des Moines plus Pleasant Hill.<\/li>\n<li>Largest House districts: 17 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2017.pdf\">(Ida, Monona, western Harrison, southeast Woodbury counties)<\/a>\u00a0followed by 80 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2080.pdf\">(Appanoose, western Mahaska, Monroe, and northwestern Wapello counties)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Largest Senate districts: 9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/Senate\/Senate%20District%2009.pdf\">(Ida, Harrison, Shelby, western Crawford, southeastern Woodbury counties)<\/a> followed by 12 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/Senate\/Senate%20District%2012.pdf\">(Fremont, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Ringgold, and Taylor counties)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Largest House district population in 2010: 72 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2072.pdf\">(Tama County, Marshall County west and south of Marshalltown, and La Porte City)<\/a>, 299 above ideal<\/li>\n<li>Smallest House district population in 2010: 29 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/DOCS\/Resources\/Redist\/2011\/2011-03-31\/House\/House%20District%2029.pdf\">(most of Jasper County)<\/a>, 288 below ideal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No particular theme here, just some random pieces.
