{"id":3067,"date":"2013-03-05T15:20:05","date_gmt":"2013-03-05T21:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=3067"},"modified":"2013-03-06T13:42:46","modified_gmt":"2013-03-06T19:42:46","slug":"state-semifinals-remembering-dinsdale-part-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2013\/03\/state-semifinals-remembering-dinsdale-part-1\/","title":{"rendered":"State semifinals: Remembering Dinsdale, Part 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While 2013 is the first appearance of the consolidated North Tama County Community School District in the state boys&#8217; basketball tournament, more than 60 years ago tiny Dinsdale almost lived its own version of the <em>Hoosiers<\/em> story twice.<\/p>\n<p>In Iowa in the early 1950s, basketball teams were split into classes AA, A, and B. All of them were combined for the postseason and winnowed into a 16-team tournament held at the Iowa Fieldhouse in Iowa City. <em>The Daily Iowan<\/em>, the U of I student newspaper, covered the games and <a href=\"http:\/\/dailyiowan.lib.uiowa.edu\/\">the papers are available online.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1950, Dinsdale&#8217;s entire high school enrollment was 47 students (27 boys), but the Red Devils were playing on the same terms as the Davenport Blue Devils, with nearly 2000 high schoolers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3068\" alt=\"1950TourneyList\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1950TourneyList.jpg\" width=\"460\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1950TourneyList.jpg 460w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/1950TourneyList-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>State tournament teams as listed in the Daily Iowan, March 21, 1950.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dinsdale beat Montezuma 39-34 and then Atlantic 49-47 to reach the semifinals. The contest with Davenport was anything but. The Blue Devils led 26-8 at halftime and overwhelmed the Red Devils 71-22 \u2014 but the next day Davenport did the same thing to Ankeny, winning the state championship 67-28. <a href=\"http:\/\/qctimes.com\/sports\/article_5eaa6bca-145f-5841-8889-13d8ce933b23.html\">It would be the first of three straight titles for Davenport.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then as now, the boys&#8217; tournament had consolation games. Winfield broke away in the third quarter and beat Dinsdale 50-45. Dinsdale finished the season with a record of 34-4, the fourth-best team in the state.<\/p>\n<p>For Davenport to finish that championship three-peat, the Blue Devils would have to play the Dinsdale Red Devils again.
