{"id":3457,"date":"2013-06-03T12:59:56","date_gmt":"2013-06-03T17:59:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=3457"},"modified":"2013-06-03T12:59:56","modified_gmt":"2013-06-03T17:59:56","slug":"map-exhibit-at-figge-art-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2013\/06\/map-exhibit-at-figge-art-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Map exhibit at Figge Art Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I took advantage of one of the few days that didn&#8217;t have much rain in it to go to Davenport and see the exhibit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.figgeartmuseum.org\/Figge-Art-Museum-(1)\/December-2012\/Marking-Territory-Cartographic-Treasures-of-the-Mi.aspx\">&#8220;Marking Territory: Cartographic Treasures of the Mississippi River and the World Beyond.&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0It&#8217;s around for two more weeks.<\/p>\n<p>I have to say it was a mixed bag at best. I loved seeing the old maps. However, this is an <em>art exhibit<\/em>, not a map or history exhibit. The maps aren&#8217;t in much of a chronological order and documentation was skimpy at best and included little that was Iowa-specific. The narrative that does exist clearly has an agenda\/perspective, not unlike the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.figgeartmuseum.org\/Figge-Art-Museum-(1)\/July-2011\/The-American-West-as-Myth.aspx\">American West<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.figgeartmuseum.org\/Figge-Art-Museum-(1)\/May-2012\/American-Regionalism.aspx\">Regionalism<\/a> galleries elsewhere in the museum. (The text at the links is the text at the entrance to each gallery.)<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere in the museum, the most interesting pieces may have been the &#8220;blueprints&#8221; for Wayne Manor and the &#8220;Brady Bunch&#8221; home&#8221; along with a map of Mayberry in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.figgeartmuseum.org\/Figge-Art-Museum-(1)\/February-2013\/American-Pop-Art!.aspx\">Pop Art exhibit<\/a>.
