{"id":3758,"date":"2013-08-16T23:34:56","date_gmt":"2013-08-17T04:34:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=3758"},"modified":"2013-08-17T00:28:13","modified_gmt":"2013-08-17T05:28:13","slug":"state-fair-observations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2013\/08\/state-fair-observations\/","title":{"rendered":"State fair observations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In no particular order:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 16px;\">Friday was the 30th anniversary of the hottest day ever of the Iowa State Fair \u2014 August 16, 1983, which was Older Iowans Day that year. I was there.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>However, the National Weather Service was not there this year. Was its display &#8220;sequestered&#8221;?<\/li>\n<li>This time around, you could not have asked for better weather during the entire fair, so\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iowastatefair.org\/about-us\/daily-attendance\/\">these attendance numbers<\/a> are a bit stunning. I blame early school.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rk8_ezPC-Vg\">five years since this happened<\/a>, which I also witnessed.<\/li>\n<li>The sun shining through the west Agriculture Building skylight about 6:30 PM puts the Butter Cow in a whole new light, literally.<\/li>\n<li>One bit of fair tradition gone this year, maybe last year too: Daily markets are no longer written up outside the WHO Crystal Studio.<\/li>\n<li>Has the Swine Barn become the Goat Barn, or is it just my timing?<\/li>\n<li>Ads on the Sky Glider chairs? Bad form.<\/li>\n<li>There was a Lincoln Highway photo category <em>and I missed it<\/em>. *kicks self*<\/li>\n<li>It is (still) <em>unnatural and wrong<\/em> to see Halloween candy out at the grocery store while the fair is going on.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.desmoinesregister.com\/dmr\/index.php\/2013\/08\/15\/new-mother-decides-to-return-to-fair\/article\"><em><strong>Koltyn<\/strong><\/em>?!?!?!<\/a><\/li>\n<li>I had two items <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buzzfeed.com\/bennyjohnson\/17-heart-stopping-foods-at-the-iowa-state-fair\">on this list<\/a>\u00a0(cheese curds and the double bacon corn dog), and partially qualify for three more: I had the sit-down pork chop instead of the stick, and had a funnel cake and hot beef sundae earlier this summer.<\/li>\n<li>If I had known the double bacon corn dog was served with syrup, I would&#8217;ve had it for breakfast instead.<\/li>\n<li>Re: the above two bullet points:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/25.media.tumblr.com\/tumblr_mbefulDYKh1r4soubo1_500.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In no particular order: Friday was the 30th anniversary of the hottest day ever of the Iowa State Fair \u2014 August 16, 1983, which was Older Iowans Day that year.
