A steady roar thundered across the water as everything movable broke loose.<\/em><br \/>\n\u2014 Walter Lord, <em>A Night to Remember<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Oklahoma State University Board of Regents <a href=\"http:\/\/newsok.com\/oklahoma-state-universityam-board-of-regents-to-meet-wednesday-on-conference-realignment\/article\/3605633?custom_click=lead_story_title\">is meeting Wednesday<\/a>. Can&#8217;t be good. (I was mistaken in thinking that OU and OSU had the same board.)<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a reminder that the NCAA <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/college-sports\/story\/_\/id\/6989230\/ncaa-president-mark-emmert-says-consulted-conferences-presidents\">has no control<\/a> over any of this. There is no commissioner of college football.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/sports\/college\/mizzou\/article_35f65c50-a87f-50a3-9f42-ff4c1ad32468.html\">Post-Dispatch:<\/a> Is Missouri-Oklahoma the beginning of the end? Missouri coach Gary Pinkel <a href=\"http:\/\/campuscorner.kansascity.com\/node\/2067\">says it&#8217;s &#8220;naive&#8221;<\/a> to think about saving the Big 12.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>A Lawrence Journal-World sports reporter <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.kusports.com\/news\/2011\/sep\/19\/leftovers-menu-ku\/\">spells out doom:<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>The truth is, Kansas University is on the brink of ranking as one of the biggest losers in the conference realignment musical-chairs game it had nothing to do with setting in motion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dallas Morning News (via S.F. Chronicle): <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2011\/09\/19\/SPH81L6AKV.DTL&amp;type=printable\">The Pac-16 will happen. Or it won&#8217;t.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Jennifer Floyd Engel uses, um, <a href=\"http:\/\/msn.foxsports.com\/collegefootball\/story\/texas-longhorns-oklahoma-sooners-big-12-pac-12-NCAA-realignment-fiasco-will-hurt-game-091911\">colorful language<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Give the ACC credit for winning the inevitable-since-realignment-began showdown with the Big East. This leaves the Big 12 losers to join with the Big East left-behinds to form the Big Ten-uous Conference, with Desperate and Scared to Death divisions. &#8230; All the Baylor lawyers in existence cannot stop this snowball rolling straight toward hell; an atrociously ill-conceived and not-properly-vetted blueprint for expansion started to become reality with Pitt and Syracuse and will not stop until every inch has been affected.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/blog\/collegebasketballnation\/post\/_\/id\/35477\/realignment-leaves-hoops-programs-adrift\">A basketball perspective<\/a> gives ISU a couple of scraps:<\/p>\n<p><em>Lest we forget, the Big East as it currently is (minus Syracuse and Pittsburgh, and let&#8217;s throw in UConn and Rutgers, too) is not a bad basketball league. It&#8217;s still pretty good, actually. Now throw in Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Baylor and Iowa State. That&#8217;s a viable hoops conference, kids. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>But when it comes to the Big East, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tnr.com\/blog\/jonathan-chait\/78100\/how-the-northeast-different-the-rest-america\">look at this from last year<\/a>, where a poll discussed at the New Republic of all places points out how little the Northeast cares about college football.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seen and unseen, the great and unknown tumbled together in a writhing heap as the bow plunged deeper and the stern rose higher\u2026 .
