{"id":5248,"date":"2014-08-26T13:25:48","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T18:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=5248"},"modified":"2014-08-26T13:04:24","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T18:04:24","slug":"mmc-remsen-union-next-for-grade-sharing-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2014\/08\/mmc-remsen-union-next-for-grade-sharing-talks\/","title":{"rendered":"MMC, Remsen-Union next for grade-sharing talks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the last school districts in Iowa that includes a township in its name may be the next domino in the continued consolidation trend.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/siouxcityjournal.com\/news\/local\/columnists\/gallagher\/gallagher-first-day-offers-small-iowa-schools-one-big-challenge\/article_0745590d-9fb8-58be-a6bb-e7f870e65c61.html\">Tim Gallagher of the <em>Sioux City Journal<\/em> reported last week<\/a> that Remsen-Union and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn were to have meetings with a consultant about who would get what grades if they decided to engage in sharing. Gallagher said the two already share summer sports and a few others.<\/p>\n<p>Remsen-Union is in a slightly different spot than other rural districts, because it also has to contend with a private school in the same town, Remsen St. Mary&#8217;s. MMC is going to suffer some effects of the Tyson plant closure in Cherokee.<\/p>\n<p>The two districts had a combined certified enrollment over 1100 in 2000-01 but last year couldn&#8217;t even muster up 850. Together, they&#8217;d be about the size of West Branch or Aplington-Parkersburg.<\/p>\n<p>Union Township is south-southwest of Remsen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the last school districts in Iowa that includes a township in its name may be the next domino in the continued consolidation trend.
