{"id":5470,"date":"2014-11-05T10:45:24","date_gmt":"2014-11-05T16:45:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=5470"},"modified":"2014-11-05T10:45:24","modified_gmt":"2014-11-05T16:45:24","slug":"iowa-elects-a-woman-to-congress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2014\/11\/iowa-elects-a-woman-to-congress\/","title":{"rendered":"Iowa elects a woman to Congress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All it took was the <a href=\"http:\/\/thegazette.com\/subject\/news\/ernst-wins-the-day-in-battle-for-iowas-us-senate-seat-20141104\">first open U.S. Senate seat in Iowa since 1968<\/a>\u00a0and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/politics\/iowa-poll\/2014\/11\/01\/iowa-poll-message-mess-grassley\/18345417\/ \">37-second video.<\/a>\u00a0Joni Ernst will be Iowa&#8217;s first female Senator and first woman elected to Congress from a continually shrinking Iowa delegation. (In 1968, when Harold Hughes won that open seat, Iowa had <em>seven<\/em> House seats.)<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in the U.S. House races, two open seats \u2014 another rarity, and now half of Iowa&#8217;s House contingent \u2014 both went to Republicans. <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2012\/11\/how-iowas-congressmen-have-exited\/\">It was the first election with two open seats since 1986<\/a>.
