{"id":5769,"date":"2015-02-03T15:05:09","date_gmt":"2015-02-03T21:05:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=5769"},"modified":"2015-02-03T11:50:17","modified_gmt":"2015-02-03T17:50:17","slug":"chain-of-rocks-canal-bridge-being-demolished","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2015\/02\/chain-of-rocks-canal-bridge-being-demolished\/","title":{"rendered":"Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge being demolished"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A major bridge that carried Route 66 traffic for a while near St. Louis, the westbound I-270 Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/news\/traffic\/along-for-the-ride\/countdown-begins-to-next-bridge-implosion-in-metro-east\/article_c3347fd5-3721-5a5f-a182-07398bb3ca6f.html\">was partially imploded today<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge \u2014\u00a0<em>not<\/em> the one over the Mississippi River, but to the east in Illinois \u2014 had a replacement built last year. From the mid-1960s until 1979, the pair of spans carried US 66 as well. <a href=\"http:\/\/usends.com\/60-69\/066\/066.html\">(US 66 was truncated to Joplin in 1979.)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The canal bridge that connects to the old Chain of Rocks Bridge is still alive and well.<\/p>\n<p>Another piece of Route 66 history was lost last year when the <a href=\"http:\/\/kplr11.com\/2014\/10\/21\/automotive-deck-being-removed-from-historic-macarthur-bridge\/\">vehicle deck was removed from the MacArthur Bridge<\/a> in downtown St. Louis.
