That&#8217;s not a color problem, it&#8217;s a drought problem.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5795\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/fortbrulemarker.jpg\" width=\"540\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/fortbrulemarker.jpg 540w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/fortbrulemarker-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fort Brule was established in 1861 but abandoned less than a decade later, <a href=\"http:\/\/cdm16384.contentdm.oclc.org\/cdm\/singleitem\/collection\/p15307coll2\/id\/179\/rec\/2\">as this <em>Sioux Falls Argus-Leader<\/em> article from 1954 explains<\/a>. (That link also includes the text on the monument.) Iowa soldiers served at the fort one year. This marker is on SD 50 about a mile and a half east of SD 11 (old US 77).<\/p>\n<p>This marker reminds us that while Iowa became a state in 1846, the western reaches of the state and points farther west did not see extensive white settlement until decades later.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just a few miles from the Big Sioux River and Iowa&#8217;s westernmost point lies a marker recalling the late American frontier.
