{"id":5957,"date":"2015-04-10T10:00:19","date_gmt":"2015-04-10T15:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=5957"},"modified":"2015-04-08T23:51:28","modified_gmt":"2015-04-09T04:51:28","slug":"aug-23-set-as-hard-start-date-for-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2015\/04\/aug-23-set-as-hard-start-date-for-schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Aug. 23 set as hard start date for schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After months of debate, the Iowa Legislature agreed that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcrg.com\/subject\/news\/bill-setting-aug-23-iowa-school-start-date-heading-to-governors-desk-20150331\">school should be allowed to start<\/a> a full week to 10 days earlier than spelled out in current law, <em>which is what should have been done all along<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kcci.com\/news\/new-iowa-school-start-date-to-become-official-this-friday\/32233894\">An Aug. 23 date<\/a> will ensure school starts after the Iowa State Fair with at least one Friday before Labor Day. Hopefully this will put a stop to calendar creep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/coolice.legis.iowa.gov\/cool-ice\/default.asp?category=billinfo&amp;service=iowacode&amp;ga=83&amp;input=279.10\">Until today, the law mandated<\/a>\u00a0a start day as late as Sept. 2 if Sept. 1 falls on Monday (&#8220;&#8230;\u00a0no\u00a0sooner than a day during the calendar week in which the first day of\u00a0September falls,&#8221; and in that case the 1st would be Labor Day) or\u00a0as early as Aug. 26<em> if and only if<\/em> Sept. 1 is a Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>On a related note, Google searches for &#8220;Governor\/Gov. Gronstal&#8221; yielded fewer hits than I expected, although it did grab a <em>Des Moines Register<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.desmoinesregister.com\/dmr\/index.php\/2011\/06\/07\/budget-stalemate-speakers-take-digs-ag-gov-gronstal-pan-gop-too\">article from 2011<\/a>.
