{"id":6025,"date":"2015-04-29T10:07:54","date_gmt":"2015-04-29T15:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=6025"},"modified":"2015-04-28T13:59:07","modified_gmt":"2015-04-28T18:59:07","slug":"google-kills-classic-maps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2015\/04\/google-kills-classic-maps\/","title":{"rendered":"Google kills Classic Maps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You know how, when new products come out that are worse than the old ones, or are incompatible, or are inextricably linked with &#8220;the cloud&#8221;, or just plain don&#8217;t do what the old one does, the rebuttal is &#8220;you don&#8217;t have to use it&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Well, here&#8217;s another piece of evidence against that rebuttal, because <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/maps\/answer\/6166252?p=update&amp;hl=en&amp;rd=1\">eventually, you <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> have a choice<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Soon, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">updated version of Google Maps<\/a>\u00a0will become your desktop Maps experience. You&#8217;ll no longer be able to use the older, classic Google Maps.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The classic Google Maps, i.e., the one that <em>works<\/em>. The one without zillions of squares. The one that lets me type &#8220;from: CID to: la crosse wi to: mankato mn to: CID&#8221;, knows exactly what I mean, and creates a route accordingly. The one that doesn&#8217;t suck up the CPU to zoom in on Street View. And the one <a href=\"https:\/\/discussions.apple.com\/thread\/6138149\">that works in Safari for Mac OS 10.6.8.<\/a>\u00a0As of Tuesday, GMaps defaults to &#8220;lite&#8221; mode, but chews up CPU cycles and no longer has zoom levels on the scale, just plus\/minus.<\/p>\n<p>For the moment, iPhoto Places appears to be unaffected (but still has the long-standing map-jumping issue).
