Next school year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PrescottElementarySchool\/posts\/1080401085310474:0\">everyone will be &#8220;tuitioned in&#8221; to Creston<\/a>. The districts cannot consolidate this calendar year because the election was held this calendar year. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.crestonnews.com\/2015\/04\/07\/unofficial-results-creston-prescott-school-consolidation-passes\/a5gocja\/\">This <em>Creston News-Advertiser<\/em> article<\/a> is a year off.)<\/p>\n<p>This means Prescott will be a zombie district in 2015-16. It exists, yet for all intents and purposes it is dead. It will educate no students. Titonka was a zombie district in 2013-14 when it <a href=\"http:\/\/globegazette.com\/news\/local\/titonka-elementary-coming-to-algona-schools\/article_afeb6aac-a87a-11e2-a43e-001a4bcf887a.html\">sent all students to Algona<\/a> rather than keep kindergarten through fourth grade.<\/p>\n<p>(If no one has used the phrase &#8220;zombie district&#8221; before, I am\u00a0claiming coinage.)<\/p>\n<p>The Facebook post from the Prescott school (it&#8217;s from the superintendent, so I&#8217;ll count it as a valid source), emphasizes that Creston&#8217;s full name is Creston\u00a0<em>Community<\/em>\u00a0School District. This use of the word &#8220;Community&#8221; is intended to encompass a greater area (i.e. be a bone thrown to the towns losing out). The most prominent example beyond the city level is Benton Community (instead of Benton County or South Benton), a multiple-district merger that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/law.justia.com\/cases\/iowa\/supreme-court\/1965\/51766-0.html\">went all the way to the Iowa Supreme Court<\/a>\u00a0in the 1960s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January 27, 2011: Prescott school building.
