{"id":6617,"date":"2015-10-01T10:00:36","date_gmt":"2015-10-01T15:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=6617"},"modified":"2015-10-01T20:00:33","modified_gmt":"2015-10-02T01:00:33","slug":"one-more-last-chance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2015\/10\/one-more-last-chance\/","title":{"rendered":"One more last chance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Farragut school district could be forcibly dissolved because its locker rooms, showers, and weight room are not compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act.<\/p>\n<p>That is what the 200-student <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omaha.com\/news\/iowa\/farragut-iowa-school-district-given-one-final-lifeline\/article_5efd6644-1236-56fc-8799-a101431b69c8.html \">school in far southwestern Iowa is up against<\/a> after the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hamburgreporter.com\/article\/20150911\/NEWS\/150919965\/1995\/NEWS\/?Start=2\">nine-vote failure of a PPEL the day after Labor Day<\/a>. Granted, it&#8217;s a slight oversimplification because the district also got dinged for not having its nondiscrimination policies posted online, lacking a few required classes, and for teacher licensing\/evaluation issues. (Oh, and the vo-ag space the district is using in Sidney after having to close its existing vo-ag space for ADA issues <em>also<\/em> has been judged non-ADA compliant.) But the crux of the matter is, Farragut is not engaged in a $1.2 million construction project right now, and that&#8217;s a problem.\u00a0The school has since\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kmaland.com\/news\/showers-shut-off-at-farragut-school\/article_53ba43b6-62c7-11e5-828c-cf3786e2ca7a.html\">turned off the showers<\/a>\u00a0and locked up the weight room.<\/p>\n<p>The issues individually may be small, but they&#8217;re stacked up with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/education\/lost-schools\/2015\/01\/25\/iowa-lost-schools-deficits-budgets\/22237789\/\">school district&#8217;s negative unspent balance<\/a>, which was a trigger for the potential loss of accreditation in the first place. And if Farragut overspends <em>again<\/em>, then don&#8217;t worry about the PPEL because you won&#8217;t have a school.<\/p>\n<p>Anything that happens in (or to) Farragut will have direct effects on Hamburg, which is in whole-grade sharing with Farragut and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nonpareilonline.com\/news\/local\/area-voters-say-yes-no-at-the-polls\/article_77506e74-7a9a-11e4-a304-97284005eeac.html\">already rejected consolidation once.<\/a>\u00a0Hamburg also got cited in the report for the lack of a nondiscrimination statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Education report from the September meeting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.educateiowa.gov\/sites\/files\/ed\/documents\/2015-09-17%20Hamburg%20and%20Farragut%20Tab%20I.pdf\">is available as a PDF<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kmaland.com\/news\/farragut-schools-plan-second-ppel-vote\/article_fa2c23b2-6854-11e5-850d-f3f8ff51dd7d.html\">New vote scheduled for Feb. 3<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Farragut school district could be forcibly dissolved because its locker rooms, showers, and weight room are not compliant with the Americans With Disabilities Act.
