{"id":6782,"date":"2015-11-23T10:00:28","date_gmt":"2015-11-23T16:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=6782"},"modified":"2015-11-21T00:28:31","modified_gmt":"2015-11-21T06:28:31","slug":"mmcru-a-quadrant-unfilled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2015\/11\/mmcru-a-quadrant-unfilled\/","title":{"rendered":"MMCRU: A quadrant unfilled"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The combined Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn\/Remsen-Union High School will be called&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/siouxcityjournal.com\/news\/local\/western-iowa-school-districts-joining-under-grade-sharing-decide-name\/article_05472c1a-66bb-526c-b927-2852d114fdb6.html\">MMCRU<\/a>. I thought there could have been a concession to Remsen-Union to give it the first part of the name, but overall in Iowa there&#8217;s only a handful of two-name\/two-part districts where the first town is <em>not<\/em> the one with the high school. (Among them are Aplington-Parkersburg and Gladbrook-Reinbeck.)<\/p>\n<p>The new nickname will be the Royals, which until now was unique to Colo-NESCO. (Another nickname note: Chris Andringa let me know a few weeks ago that Rock Valley, like Remsen-Union, is also the Rockets, in the sports it doesn&#8217;t share with Boyden-Hull.)<\/p>\n<p>The other option for a new name was Northwest, which would have been a vague choice for the multi-county location but only the second geographically correct one in a &#8220;quadrant&#8221; setup:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Northeast of Goose Lake has been around a while but is in far east-central Iowa.<\/li>\n<li>Corning and Villisca <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2013\/02\/villisca-corning-simple-name-wasnt-even-an-option\/\">combined to form Southwest Valley<\/a> a few years ago. The valley in question is the Nodaway River, but there&#8217;s already a Nodaway Valley, and &#8220;West Fork Hundred and Two Valley&#8221; is slightly cumbersome.<\/li>\n<li>The direction for the new Southeast Valley comes from Southeast Webster-Grand, which is in north-central Iowa. It most likely pre-empts any new district <em>actually in<\/em> southeast Iowa using that, though.<\/li>\n<li>And, of course, the two &#8220;Central&#8221; districts <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2015\/11\/central-clinton-officially-renamed-central-dewitt\/\">discussed in previous blog posts<\/a> that are located in counties along the Mississippi River.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MMC won a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/sports\/high-school\/2015\/11\/19\/crazy-8s-mmc-wins-football-title-57-52-game\/76059752\/\">state football championship last week<\/a>, so it&#8217;s going out on a high note. (And also putting an end to a <a href=\"http:\/\/m.kxno.com\/onair\/murph-and-andy-31180\/zip-rizzo-on-marcus-meriden-cleghorn-14144464\/\">very minor Chris Hassel character on KXNO<\/a>.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The combined Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn\/Remsen-Union High School will be called&#8230; MMCRU.
