Informal typing is one thing, but then there is this ridiculousness. First, this is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/primaries\/states\/ia\">how election results (in this case, Iowa&#8217;s) look on CNN&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7205\" alt=\"cnnresultslowercase\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/cnnresultslowercase.jpg\" width=\"600\" height=\"530\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/cnnresultslowercase.jpg 600w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/cnnresultslowercase-300x265.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There isn&#8217;t a single capitalized letter to be seen, <em>not even the candidates&#8217; names.<\/em> Is it a coding script thing? If so, the code needs to change to &#8220;capitalize first letter of any text string.&#8221; Is it a design thing? If so, there are designers who need to be beaten over the head with a textbook or two. (The AP Style Guide is too lightweight.)<\/p>\n<p>Then there&#8217;s the Girl Scouts of America, which in a national rebranding in late 2012 put not only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedieline.com\/blog\/2012\/10\/1\/before-after-girl-scout-cookies.html\">the names of the cookies in lowercase<\/a>, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.girlscouts.org\/\">the organization&#8217;s logo itself<\/a>. This typographical travesty has an identifiable culprit, &#8220;the New York office of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.anthemww.com\/\">Anthem Worldwide<\/a>, the brand development division of Schawk Inc.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Switching to lowercase letters <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/05\/31\/weekinreview\/31marsh.html?_r=0\">is supposed to convey &#8220;friendliness&#8221;<\/a> but this is extreme to the point of violating basic tenets of the English language. <em>(lol like ppl care about those \u2014Ed.) <\/em>It&#8217;s incorrect to the point of distracting, at least to those with a semblance of education. The only positive thing I can say about intentional un-capitalization in anything that isn&#8217;t an Internet chat is that it&#8217;s not as bad as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nfl\/2016\/2\/29\/11114190\/Trump-super-tuesday-NFL-combine-dick\">turning crimes against the written word into performance art<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Girl Scouts provided another example of Morrison&#8217;s Law of Shrinking Products* in action, too. The previous package of Thin Mints contained &#8220;about 8&#8221; servings of 4 cookies apiece, and the current one contains <em>exactly<\/em> 8, shrinking the total from 34 to 32. (Of course, it often ends up as, &#8220;Serving size, 1 sleeve; servings per container, 2.&#8221; Or is that just me?)<\/p>\n<p>*<a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2012\/07\/the-return-of-the-incredible-shrinking-products\/\">&#8220;Whenever the package says \u201c10% more free\u201d or gets redesigned, look out \u2014 chances are it\u2019s preparation for less food at the same price.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No wonder today&#8217;s students can&#8217;t understand capitalization rules.
