The week&#8217;s previous post referencing the trend was written around two weeks ago, but a tour of the Hy-Vee frozen section has merited a second entry along that line.<\/p>\n<p>A month ago, Wells Dairy, headquartered in Le Mars, unveiled a new Blue Bunny ice cream logo and packaging. Both the <a href=\"http:\/\/siouxcityjournal.com\/business\/local\/wells-blue-bunny-introduces-new-mascot-named-blu\/article_5810c35b-4384-56e8-86c6-ed0bb9b98fe1.html\"><em>Sioux City Journal<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ktiv.com\/story\/31192752\/2016\/02\/10\/blue-bunny-transforms-image-with-new-logo-and-packaging\">KTIV<\/a> had stories. The ice cream containers are now transparent. But hidden in plain sight is a decline in how much you&#8217;re getting. Instead of 1.75 quarts it&#8217;s now labeled as 48 ounces, or 1.5 quarts. Some of the specialty ice cream is down to 46 ounces. The default supermarket size used to be a half-gallon \u2014 13 years ago, because that&#8217;s when I mentioned the change starting to happen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iowastatedaily.com\/opinion\/article_e2c26761-8196-5cae-9e9a-0dd1ff68c116.html\">in an <em>Iowa State Daily<\/em> column<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To Blue Bunny&#8217;s credit, the change is acknowledged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluebunny.com\/faq\">in a website FAQ<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/BlueBunnyIceCream\/photos\/a.324177123326.195234.63897508326\/10154628232193327\/?type=3&amp;comment_id=10154629115618327&amp;comment_tracking={%22tn%22%3A%22R0%22}\">response to irate Facebook commenters<\/a>.\u00a0Taking away eight ounces of ice cream should not be a tradeoff for transparent packaging, and yet, that&#8217;s pretty much what happened. Of course, the price isn&#8217;t dropping by a corresponding amount.<\/p>\n<p>Wells Blue Bunny could be the last major-label ice cream manufacturer to drop from 1.75 to 1.5 quarts, so I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if store brands followed suit in the next year or so. For what it&#8217;s worth (less than it used to be!), the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.consumerreports.org\/cro\/news\/2014\/05\/can-shrinking-packages-trick-inflation\/index.htm\">Consumer Price Index does account for continually shrinking sizes of consumer goods<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not even an Iowa icon is immune from the Law of Shrinking Products.
