The fair was still about two weeks away \u2014 and the advance ticket isn&#8217;t quite the discount it used to be \u2014 but it made me wonder.<\/p>\n<p>The fair isn&#8217;t invisible in the eastern part of the state \u2014 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/subject\/life\/people-places\/iowa-state-fair-awakens-the-senses-20160811\">the <em>Gazette<\/em> had a story last week<\/a> and I&#8217;ve seen a billboard or two. But it seems&#8230;less.<\/p>\n<p>Omaha, apparently, is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.omaha.com\/columnists\/dickson\/breaking-brad-you-d-think-the-iowa-state-fair-might\/article_2fcac96e-5a4f-11e6-abf2-93e9b58d22f8.html\">drowning in promotions for everything-on-a-stick<\/a>. That makes sense because\u00a0the Nebraska State Fair was relocated to Grand Island in 2009 and it is to the Iowa State Fair what the Tama County Fair is to the Clay County Fair. (This also explains the rise in Husker-branded things in vendor stands.)<\/p>\n<p>The fair has 4H projects, fair queens, and ag producers from every corner of the state, but many Iowans don&#8217;t have such connections. It&#8217;s possible I&#8217;ve misjudged the situation, but to me a year without the fair is unfathomable, and I want every Iowan to share the same love.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>August 16, 2013: Lego Iowa at the Varied Industries Building.
