Pottawattamie is the second-largest county in Iowa (954 square miles), behind Kossuth (973), which <em>should<\/em> be two counties but isn&#8217;t because of a <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=ZsYRAQAAIAAJ&amp;pg=PA220#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">historical trail that involves Humboldt County being compared to Poland<\/a>.*<\/p>\n<p>If Pottawattamie County had been divided, Avoca would have been the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikisource.org\/wiki\/History_of_Iowa_From_the_Earliest_Times_to_the_Beginning_of_the_Twentieth_Century\/3\/Counties\/Belknap\">Belknap County\u00a0seat<\/a> \u2014 a &#8220;four-by-three&#8221; like Audubon or Ida** \u2014 with the line running south from the southern part of today&#8217;s Harrison-Shelby county line. That would have left 522 square miles of Pottawattamie to the west, still larger than Belknap.<\/p>\n<h5>*How did a copy of &#8220;History of Kossuth County, Iowa&#8221; (1913) end up at the Stanford library?<br \/>\n**Ida County got cheated.
