Once again, a beautiful Art Deco school building is facing the challenge of time, cost, and utility.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn has issued a challenge to its voters. If a bond issue doesn&#8217;t pass April 4, the northwest Iowa school district says it will close a building, <a href=\"http:\/\/kiwaradio.com\/local-news\/if-vote-fails-hms-will-close-a-school-building\/\">KIWA Radio reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But the thing is, <em>if the bond issue passes, the elementary in Hartley will close anyway. <\/em>Twice before, <a href=\" http:\/\/www.ktiv.com\/story\/25135922\/2014\/04\/01\/voting-results-from-hartley-melvin-sanborn-school-district \">in 2014<\/a> when the referendum was rejected with nearly 60% voting no, <a href=\"http:\/\/kiwaradio.com\/local-news\/hms-bond-issue-defeated-again-woelber-elected-at-bh\/\">and last year<\/a> when it got a majority but not a supermajority (<a href=\"http:\/\/siouxcityjournal.com\/news\/local\/hms-makes-third-attempt-to-pass-bond-issue\/article_d0b9f5d3-d2ea-5ca0-9f36-aededc696e53.html\">off by 47 votes<\/a>, says the<em> Sioux City Journal<\/em>), closing HMS Elementary was a known component of the plan. A new elementary would be built onto the high school at a different location in Hartley. The hedging between &#8220;close <em>a<\/em> building&#8221; and &#8220;close <em>this<\/em> building&#8221; is curious because the last vote got better results in Sanborn than Hartley.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>July 21, 2012: Current HMS Elementary School in Hartley, formerly Hartley High School.
