There will be an opportunity to share opinions, but I think everyone&#8217;s mind is pretty much made up. The GR school board is <a href=\"http:\/\/wcfcourier.com\/news\/local\/education\/gladbrook-reinbeck-school-board-urges-no-vote-on-dissolution\/article_5aa36b6e-4fbf-5636-b6fa-5fd2b87ea07a.html\">making its opposition known<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The fight has stirred up such hard feelings that nearly a dozen Gladbrook residents who signed the petition to force the vote <a href=\"http:\/\/wcfcourier.com\/news\/local\/education\/gladbrook-reinbeck-residents-choosing-sides-on-school-district-dissolution-plan\/article_7c6f91b2-08e8-5781-9376-43ed606a6042.html\">wouldn&#8217;t talk about it to the <em>Waterloo Courier<\/em><\/a>. One who would speak on the record is Gladbrook mayor (and former long-time Tama County supervisor) Keith Sash, who is in favor.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;We used to be pretty well even and we worked together for the betterment of the school, not the betterment of one community,&#8221; said Sash, suggesting the balance has &#8220;kind of gone out the window. It&#8217;s time for a divorce and (getting) a new partner.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Substitute &#8220;country&#8221; and &#8220;area\/group&#8221; for &#8220;school&#8221; and &#8220;community&#8221; and the quote could be dropped in the national dialogue today. Everyone feels they&#8217;ve been done wrong and staying together for the sake of the children (literally or metaphorically) isn&#8217;t enough to hold back <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/140948\/bluexit-blue-states-exit-trump-red-america\">calls for a clean break<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And I don&#8217;t have answers, on either level. Because on the one hand, I feel like I totally understand (and <em>boy howdy<\/em> do I know where and what I want to yell), and on the other hand, divorce is a catastrophically bad idea but I don&#8217;t have any solutions that stop both sides from being <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/commentary-everybody-thinks-theyre-losing\/\">convinced that their side is losing.<\/a>\u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.providencejournal.com\/news\/20170704\/jeffersons-last-letter-all-eyes-are-opened-or-opening-to-rights-of-man\">recent essay originally in the <em>Washington Post<\/em><\/a> said Thomas Jefferson&#8217;s &#8220;faith that every generation would be a little better than the one before&#8221; may &#8220;seem naive today&#8221; \u2014 and yet, it seems to me that was a key component of the American spirit until ten minutes ago, or ten years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, I explored how Iowa&#8217;s small schools, enrollment-wise, are <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2016\/06\/iowas-largest-enrollment-gainers-2001-2015\/\">losing a worse-than-zero-sum game<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/local\/waukee\/2016\/05\/09\/waukees-second-high-school-open-2021\/84135184\/\">Waukee wins<\/a> and Gladbrook loses. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/local\/ankeny\/2017\/04\/05\/ankeny-planning-another-prairie-trail-elementary\/99990820\/\">Ankeny wins<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kalonanews.com\/kalona\/featured---kalona-news---a-tearful-decision\/article_471d898a-f388-11e6-86a9-77f021fb218e.html\">Ainsworth loses<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/subject\/news\/education\/k-12-education\/liberty-high-staff-hiring-almost-complete-20170408\">North Liberty wins <\/a>and <a href=\"http:\/\/ktvo.com\/news\/local\/fairfield-enrollment-down-with-libertyville-closing\">Libertyville loses<\/a>. This isn&#8217;t just about schools; it goes far, far beyond that.
