As of July 1, the agency \u2014 made up of the former AEAs based in\u00a0Clear Lake (2),\u00a0Marshalltown (6), and Cedar Falls (7) \u2014 is known as Central Rivers AEA.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Toledo Chronicle<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tamatoledonews.com\/page\/content.detail\/id\/604495\/Area-Ed--agency-267-is--now-officially--Central-Rivers-Area--Education-Agency.html?nav=5017\">story announcing the change <\/a>also notes the AEA&#8217;s main headquarters moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/insurancenewsnet.com\/oarticle\/aea-267-moving-headquarters-to-pipac\">Pipac Center on Hudson Road <\/a>in Cedar Falls this month. Sadly, earlier in the year, <a href=\"http:\/\/wcfcourier.com\/news\/local\/education\/aea-lays-off-office-staff\/article_942a43bd-c223-59fb-b9fc-2d89db6263ba.html\">there were 10 layoffs<\/a> on the media and secretarial side.<\/p>\n<p>The name change means a public end to the original numbering of Area Education Agencies throughout Iowa. The state started out with 15, and each AEA had a community college; the original AEA boundaries can be seen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.educateiowa.gov\/community-colleges\">in this community college map<\/a>. After mergers in the 21st century, we&#8217;re down to nine. Some have kept their numbers in internal documents, but all have public-facing name changes.<\/p>\n<p>For reasons unknown, there was no Area Education Agency 8! As far back as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legis.iowa.gov\/docs\/shelves\/redbooks\/Redbook-1967-1968%20(62GA).pdf\">1967-68 <em>Iowa Official Register<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(PDF, p. 257-259), the first one printed after initial organization of &#8220;Area Community Colleges and Area Vocational Schools&#8221;, &#8220;Area VIII&#8221; simply isn&#8217;t <em>there<\/em>. Decades later, <a href=\"http:\/\/siouxcityjournal.com\/news\/merger-in-works-for-two-area-education-agencies\/article_3542681e-1077-5357-94b2-88943bf14510.html\">when AEA 3 and AEA 5 merged<\/a>, they <em>became<\/em> AEA 8, but that number doesn&#8217;t appear to be in the original system at all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thirteen months after I put Area Education Agency 267 on my &#8220;worst names in Iowa&#8221; list, something has been done about it.
