Specifically, I&#8217;m looking at the &#8220;Back to the Future&#8221; trilogy reference dropping in at the 1:42 mark.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>Ready Player One<\/em> is a book, and 2018 movie, about a dystopia where millions of people retreat into 1980s pop culture in virtual reality. <a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.collider.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/ready-player-one-tye-sheridan.jpg\">See this publicity still<\/a>, with the VR player in a trailer, and look for the Garfield stickers. I haven&#8217;t read the book but I get the gist.)<\/p>\n<p>This is the best resolution I can get, and the display rapidly retreats \u2014 just enough to make us say &#8220;Those were time circuits on a flying DeLorean!&#8221;. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2017\/film\/news\/ready-player-one-trailer-steven-spielberg-comic-con-2-1202503639\/\"><em>Variety<\/em>\u00a0article about the trailer<\/a>\u00a0essentially classifies the time machine as a character from the movies, which makes sense from a certain point of view.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9039\" alt=\"rpotimecircuits\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/rpotimecircuits.jpg\" width=\"410\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/rpotimecircuits.jpg 410w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/rpotimecircuits-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 410px) 100vw, 410px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are the time circuits from <em>Back to the Future II<\/em> when Doc, Marty, Jennifer, and Einstein are returning to 1985 from 2015, after Old Biff has been to 1955 and returned to the future:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9040\" alt=\"bttf2circuits\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bttf2circuits.jpg\" width=\"317\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bttf2circuits.jpg 317w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/bttf2circuits-300x165.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Well, lookiee here. The only difference is that\u00a0&#8220;Present Time&#8221; is Feb. 11, 2045, the year the book is set, and there are no AM\/PM indicators. (Also note 2045 is as far away from 2015 as 2015 is from 1985.) The specificity of 7:28 is a dead giveaway easter egg \u2014 although the scene in <em>Ready Player One<\/em> is in daylight, it&#8217;s also in virtual reality.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of frames after the trailer frame above, Last Time Departed\u00a0has just enough to\u00a0tease out\u00a0Nov. 12, 1955. Also, the car in the trailer is flying, which it was capable of at that point in the movies.<\/p>\n<p>The reference is fast, but does what it sets out to do \u2014 spark a &#8220;Back to the Future&#8221; nostalgia kick and get dissected by geeks with too little to blog about in July.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m going to geek out for a moment about the Ready Player One trailer released last weekend.
