{"id":9052,"date":"2017-07-25T10:00:18","date_gmt":"2017-07-25T15:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=9052"},"modified":"2017-07-23T00:17:36","modified_gmt":"2017-07-23T05:17:36","slug":"st-ansgar-school-building-preserved-for-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2017\/07\/st-ansgar-school-building-preserved-for-now\/","title":{"rendered":"St. Ansgar school building preserved, for now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In contradiction of a <a href=\"http:\/\/globegazette.com\/news\/local\/edc-to-purchase-st-ansgar-school-building\/article_cf6b3220-93e2-5801-87c6-65069c93d109.html\"><em>Mitchell County Press-News<\/em> story<\/a> that I <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2016\/08\/st-ansgar-school-will-be-torn-down\/\">blogged about 11 months ago<\/a>, the St. Ansgar school board reversed its decision to sell its 1928 school building to the city development council.<\/p>\n<p>A nonprofit group formed a counterproposal to buy and preserve the school building. The board agreed in December (<a href=\"https:\/\/bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com\/globegazette.com\/content\/tncms\/assets\/v3\/editorial\/1\/2f\/12fde118-1aa8-555d-ab29-d707f4d36a13\/586d69ddcb19c.pdf.pdf\">PDF of minutes<\/a>). The nonprofit bought the building for $100 and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stansgarheritage.org\/historic-elementary\">nearly $50,000 in donations and pledges.<\/a>\u00a0There is a bit of a catch: If the group cannot make a profitable go of it by Oct. 1, 2019, the building will be demolished.<\/p>\n<p>I missed this when it happened, but the <em>Gazette<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/iowaideas\/stories\/regionalism-workforce\/the-hometown-st-ansgar-residents-rally-to-preserve-quality-of-life-20170705\">has an article for its Iowa Ideas magazine\/symposium<\/a>\u00a0(employer plug!) about St. Ansgar attracting new residents, and it includes photos and information about saving the school.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In contradiction of a Mitchell County Press-News story that I blogged about 11 months ago, the St. Ansgar school board reversed its decision to sell its 1928 school building to the city development council.
