The bridge piers are 120 feet too close to each other for modern navigation standards.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>More than a decade after an <a href=\"https:\/\/iowadot.gov\/ole\/documents\/FinalBlackHawkReport.pdf\">exhaustive, in-depth study<\/a> (PDF) of the Black Hawk Bridge and surrounding area, the Iowa DOT is inching forward on replacement of the distinctive 1931 structure. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.iowadot.gov\/pim\/2017\/07\/iowa-9-allamakee-county-aug-8-2017.html\">public meeting will be held Tuesday<\/a> about possibilities for both the location and design of a new bridge.<\/p>\n<p>As the <a href=\"https:\/\/iowadot.gov\/pim\/documents\/080817Iowa9AllamakeePD3.pdf\">now-online documents show<\/a> (PDF), this is about Step 1\u00bd of a long process that will take two years just to advance the environmental assessment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>April 17, 2015: Iowa end of the Black Hawk Bridge in Lansing.
