He was 20 years old. The state of Iowa funded a monument to Hay, which was dedicated on Memorial Day 1930. Merle Hay Road and Mall are named for him, but the story behind the name isn&#8217;t told much.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Annals of Iowa<\/em> had a <a href=\"http:\/\/ir.uiowa.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=7847&amp;context=annals-of-iowa\">feature about Hay and Glidden<\/a> in 1967, on the 50th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9317\" alt=\"OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA\" src=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/GliddenWarMons.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/GliddenWarMons.jpg 500w, http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/GliddenWarMons-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Monuments to all of Glidden&#8217;s Civil War (left) and World War (right) dead in the Glidden cemetery.
