The center is where factory tours begin, but not where you&#8217;ll find the company&#8217;s top management anymore.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Last year, as I finished visiting every town in Iowa, I made it to Winnebago Industries headquarters in Forest City for a factory tour. It&#8217;s a very impressive place. The manufacturing process is emblematic of ingenuity and hard work. The company is a true Iowa icon.<\/p>\n<p>Or is that wrong to say now?<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Des Moines Register<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/money\/business\/2017\/09\/14\/executive-moves-twin-cities-winnebago-still-iowa-company\/666325001\/\">asked the question this fall<\/a>, after the\u00a0<em>Minneapolis\/St. Paul Business Journal<\/em> stated it would begin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/twincities\/news\/2017\/09\/12\/winnebago-has-parked-its-leadership-in-the-twin.html\">treating Winnebago as a Minnesota company<\/a> because its CEO, and an increasing number of top-level officials, work in Eden Prairie. Eden Prairie would be the seventh-largest city in Iowa, but up there it&#8217;s just another Twin Cities suburb. Just last week Winnebago hired a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/twincities\/news\/2017\/11\/01\/polaris-stacy-bogart-becomes-latest-twin-cities.html\">new vice president and general counsel<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2017\/11\/01\/1172644\/0\/en\/Winnebago-Industries-Names-Stacy-Bogart-Vice-President-General-Counsel-and-Corporate-Secretary.html\">She will not live in Iowa.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A few weeks ago, the <em>Minneapolis Star-Tribune<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/ceo-michael-happe-maps-new-route-for-winnebago-including-executive-offices-in-twin-cities\/451923943\/\">interviewed Winnebago&#8217;s CEO<\/a>. <em>\u201cWe\u2019ve had zero discussions with our board of directors about whether the headquarters of the company should change formally,\u201d he said. \u201cThe soul of the company is in Iowa.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Soul, yes, but. And it&#8217;s a substantial but. In a way, it&#8217;s connected to the continued drain of rural America. The Twin Cities footing &#8220;has helped the company recruit talent,&#8221; the Strib article says, and if you squint enough, the implied part is <em>because those people can&#8217;t be found in Iowa. <\/em>Or\u00a0<em>because those people aren&#8217;t willing to live in Iowa.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nebraska lost ConAgra, in part, because its CEO <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/conagra-s-move-from-omaha-to-chicago-shows-that-big-cities-still-reign\/331826751\/\">didn&#8217;t want to live in Omaha<\/a>. That isn&#8217;t the official explanation, of course, but. ConAgra&#8217;s HQ move to Chicago generated far more attention than what Winnebago is doing, but aside from taking the step of legal relocation the two seem substantially the same to me, just on different scales.<\/p>\n<p>It is more than an academic exercise. Only three Fortune 500 companies have their headquarters in Iowa, and Rockwell Collins \u2014 which <a href=\"http:\/\/khak.com\/three-iowa-companies-make-fortune-500-list-for-2016\/\">just scraped onto the list<\/a> \u2014 is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thegazette.com\/subject\/news\/business\/utc-first-approached-rockwell-collins-in-january-about-partnership-20171028\">about to be slowly digested<\/a> into a Connecticut-based firm. (The other two are Principal Financial and Casey&#8217;s.) Maytag was a Fortune 500 company, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/the-town-maytag-left-behind\/\">it&#8217;s been gone a decade<\/a>, demoted to a subdivision of Michigan-based Whirlpool. A city&#8217;s or state&#8217;s pride in being home to successful businesses and the attendant cachet \u2014 or at least the airport and hotel patronage \u2014 is not an invisible thing.<\/p>\n<p>Is Winnebago an Iowa company? Or is it a suburban Twin Cities company with its major manufacturing facilities in Iowa?
