{"id":9590,"date":"2018-01-19T10:00:30","date_gmt":"2018-01-19T16:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=9590"},"modified":"2018-01-14T23:45:05","modified_gmt":"2018-01-15T05:45:05","slug":"combination-bridge-now-spans-less-than-half-of-iowas-statehood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2018\/01\/combination-bridge-now-spans-less-than-half-of-iowas-statehood\/","title":{"rendered":"Combination Bridge now spans less than half of Iowa&#8217;s statehood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While working on revisions to my <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/maps\/siouxcity.html\">Sioux City Highway Chronology<\/a> page \u2014 for some reason I never uploaded new entries and a new 1972 map when I finished it; they&#8217;re there now \u2014 I got to thinking about the era of a historic bridge there.<\/p>\n<p>The Combination Bridge was one of six <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/maps\/iowabridges.html\">Iowa border bridges<\/a> opened in the 19th century later part of the state and US highway system. Only one remains, the Government Bridge to the Rock Island Arsenal, and it doesn&#8217;t carry any highways anymore. For all but its last five years, the Combination Bridge was <em>the<\/em> way across the Missouri River in the Sioux City area. It was replaced a week before its 85th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>The state of Iowa recently celebrated its 171st birthday, which is just more than double 85 years.
