{"id":9826,"date":"2018-04-12T10:00:46","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T15:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/?p=9826"},"modified":"2018-04-10T19:50:06","modified_gmt":"2018-04-11T00:50:06","slug":"two-year-project-maintains-ia-122-one-ways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/blog\/2018\/04\/two-year-project-maintains-ia-122-one-ways\/","title":{"rendered":"Two-year project maintains IA 122 one-ways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m not quite sure why this isn&#8217;t listed on the DOT&#8217;s public information page, but this construction season is the first part of a two-year project to rebuild IA 122 in downtown Mason City.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kimt.com\/content\/news\/Iowa-DOT-reveal-Highway-122-project-478235423.html\">The KIMT story<\/a> has views of the map, whose most notable nugget is that the east end of the one-way will have the turn softened to a more gradual curve. But the one-way system stays intact, while recent projects in some cities intend to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cedar-rapids.org\/local_government\/departments_g_-_v\/public_works\/downtown_traffic_changes.php\">get rid of one-ways<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Mason City project will take two years, and after that, here&#8217;s a question: Why should the state hold on to IA 122 east of downtown? Its <a href=\"http:\/\/iowahighwayends.net\/ends\/ia122.html\">current east end is the east city limits<\/a>; the rest was peeled away in 2003. While it makes sense to keep the four-lane running east from I-35, which was US 18 until the Avenue of the Saints freeway was completed, I think the part running east of downtown would be a good urban decommissioning candidate.
