All roads aren&#8217;t equal, even when they look the same on the phone (ugh). In Los Angeles, Waze <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/los-angeles-baxter-street-accidents-waze-traffic\/\">treated a steep city street<\/a> as a functional detour for getting off the freeway.<\/p>\n<p>Now, in Iowa, people are being directed onto a dirt road, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kwwl.com\/story\/38198930\/2018\/05\/15\/gps-leads-iowa-drivers-down-a-muddy-impassable-path#at_pco=cfd-1.0\">KWWL reports<\/a>. In fact, the word &#8220;road&#8221; is generous.<\/p>\n<p><script type='text\/javascript' src='http:\/\/KWWL.images.worldnow.com\/interface\/js\/WNVideo.js?rnd=553126675;hostDomain=www.kwwl.com;playerWidth=630;playerHeight=385;isShowIcon=true;clipId=14351036;flvUri=;partnerclipid=;adTag=News;advertisingZone=;enableAds=true;landingPage=;islandingPageoverride=;playerType=STANDARD_EMBEDDEDscript;controlsType=fixed'><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I have to argue with the GPS occasionally (current signature in the corner of this blog notwithstanding) because I want to stay on the signed road or just because I know what I&#8217;m doing. Take, for example, Google&#8217;s suggestion for going <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/greenfield+ia\/centerville+ia\/@41.1077228,-94.4825196,9z\/data=!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x87ec7d8c1ad4d1a1:0xa1481735b426cff7!2m2!1d-94.4613543!2d41.3052657!1m5!1m1!1s0x87e8f19a57316f71:0x66cb1504176ec0e!2m2!1d-92.8738196!2d40.7290565\">between Greenfield and Centerville<\/a>. Looking at a paper map or atlas, the obvious route is IA 25, US 34, IA 14, and IA 2, but Google hits up some county roads on either end.<\/p>\n<p>If I, the roadgeek, have this issue, what does that mean for the less geographically inclined? Should we treat this as a precursor of the eventual robot uprising? (As one of the remaining map-reading life-forms I&#8217;d be useful. Or a target for extermination.
